My 90 gallon

Wanted to say hello to all, I've been lurking in the background for a couple of months now admiring all the tanks here and trying to gain some knowledge of the hobby. All of the great pictures here have tempted me to upgrade my 46 bow front that was running for a few months (now the winter goldfish pond tank) to the present 90 gallon. I've made quite a few mistakes along the way (bad advice from the LFS and my plain stupidity) but I must say have learned alot from reading all the threads, searching the internet, and have since found a reputable LFS to deal with. So everyone keep up the good work with all the info and pictures......this site is very inspiring for someone like myself who is trying to get somewhat knowledgable with this hobby.

Here's a couple more pictures. Sorry they are not that good, my camera is fully auto and it's hard to get anything into focus close up. Guess I'll actually have to break down and read the owners manual on the camera to turn the auto focus off. I originally wanted to build the tank into the wall in the basement where it sits, but my wife rejected that idea. My neighbor is a cabinet builder so that is his handy work. I have a 30 gallon sump in the cabinet lit by a 36 inch corallife power compact strip on opposite cycles as the main tank. The main tank is also lit by a corallife power compact with built in moon lights (those are nice). Right now I am running a Seaclone 100 protein skimmer but would like to upgrade that sometime soon. I had crushed coral in the old tank, but opted for agragite sand for this one. The crushed coral is now in the sump. About 90 pounds of liverock and a small cleanup crew for now. Livestock - 6 line wrasse, coral beauty, couple of clowns, cleaner and peppermint shrimp, tube anemone, sebea anemone, feather duster, and a couple of hitchhiker urchins. Corals - some Zoos, star polyps, sun polyps, ricordea, shrooms, leather, maze brain, and trumpet. Starting to get lots of cocopods which is good, I would like to see a manderin in the tank down the road. I have a list a fish and corals I would like to get, but I'm going to take it slow for now.

All of this is in a 3 week old tank??

Umm...did it cycle previously or was it set up some where else first?? Thats alot of stuff in a brand new tank.

I'm guessing that after re-reading the post and seeing this that all of this came from an existing tank??

Things are looking good! I would slow down a little now on adding anything else.
Also, if the coral (yellow one) in the middle of your rock work are your sun polyps, I would move them to a little more shaded area. They like it a little more shaded.

We had a Seaclone 100 when we first started and it just finally pooped out about 2 months ago. It ran well for about a year and a half.
We just purchased a ASM G1X for one of our sponsors and this thing kicks butt compared to our Seaclone.

Anyways, looks good! I would let the tank mature a little more now and just keep up with your testing and you should be good to go!

Thanks for the pics!!

The tank did previousely cycle in the old 46 bowfront and was doing very well. A couple of weeks ago I had recently put another 40 pounds of liverock in, so it's another cycle for now. I was a little bit nervous about just taking everything out of the old and putting into the new tank, but everything is doing better now that it's in the new one.
I was wondering about the sun polyps, I guess I will have to move things around a bit to get a shady area for them - thanks.

Oh yes, watching his tank come together has given me hope that everything will survive the swapout that I made. Things are looking good for now, I do believe the bigger the better (I'll regret not going bigger than I did). Adding the sump onto the 90 I think is a big help as I was just running a fluval canister filter on the old tank. It worked well, but the sump is the way to go.

Actually Sun Polyps are not photosynthetic at all, so doesnt bother them or help them in any way. They typically grow underneath rocks and ledges becase they dont have to compete with other faster growing corals for real estate there. They do need to be fed frequently though in order to survive and grow.

A little over 3 months now

Well so far so good. Tank has survived my wife's upkeeping while I was out of town for awhile. Got to give her credit, she only had a 5 minute class on how to take care of it. Just as things are coming along, I decided to go bare bottom on the spur of the moment yesterday. So I siphoned out about 1/2 the sand for now, ordered starboard, and will finish the job when it arrives. Kind of wish I thought of this when I set the tank up. But such is life, makes everything more interesting I guess.

This past weekend I finished the job of removing all the sand. There is only little bits and pieces left. I am going to try to make a filter to suck out the rest using a powerhead and bag so I won't lose any water. Starboard should arrive tomorrow, but I'll probably wait a couple of weeks before pulling everything back out to put the starboard in. While removing the sand I thought it would be a good opportunity to remove 3 large urchins and a very aggressive Cinnamon Clown. Now the tank is a bit more calmer, and I hope my other clown will play host to my anenome.
