Re: Witty's Monster 210 Experiment

I just want to say I love this post and love Gina and Mark's tank posts as well. It's so cool to be a beginner reading this stuff because it really gives hope and makes you feel less stupid going into the hobby. Everyone goes through tough times, emergencies happen, wonderful things are discovered and added to tanks and survive. It's been so cool reading about these two tanks! I still don't have fish yet because I'm afraid of what may happen to them once I put them in there. I'm still having nightmares about what I find on my rock! I'm so happy to have found this site!
Thanks!

Re: Witty's Monster 210 Experiment

Witful, Have You kept the lights shielded? I see where keeping the lights enclosed it would be easier to remove the heat. IYOP, any trade off in light intensity versus heat removal? Also how much of the original blocks are still left? You removed part of the original spray bar .How much remains and have You had issues with it clogging? wondering if Your happy with the overall setup now?Any tenative changes in flow in the works? My apologies for the 3rd degree just wondering if Your happy with the overall setup now. Thanks!

Re: Witty's Monster 210 Experiment

yes my lights have the plexi-shield. the trade off is great in my opinion, 3-250MH create alot of heat. my canopy has 2 4" fans in it, one at each end, one blowing in, the other out for heat removal. also, with my lights so close to the water (3" from water to bulb) the risk of spash is considerable. water on hot MH, exploded bulb. been there done that.

spraybars are gone, they clogged over time, experiment-failed i have 4 of the original blocks still in the tank and removed several rocks to the sump to open up the tank for swimming room.

and yes im happy with my set up, sump is working great, skimmer is doing it thing, tank is maturing nicely now, shes just over a year old now.

a plexiglass shield that protects the bulbs from water spash. slides into canopy/light bar.

Re: Witty's Monster 210 Experiment

Thats good to know. I'd of thought it wouldn't take the heat. Sounds like a real efficient way to get the heat out before it gets in the water.

Re: Witty's Monster 210 Experiment

My Hamilton canopy has a plexiglass shield as well. It not only protects the bulbs from splashes but also keeps the condensation out. I removed the shield for a few months and found that the hood was getting a lot of moisture every morning... enough to drip back down into the tank
