Re: My 1st Father's Day Gift

I have a few pictures of the finished screen tops, thanks to acroholic for the clear mesh. Hopefully I'll have some pictures of everything moved in later in the week.

Re: My 1st Father's Day Gift

The tops look GREAT!! My next (and hopefully all future ones) tank will have that same mesh.

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: My 1st Father's Day Gift

Thought you might have a try with this type of solution to your noise problem. It's called the BeanAnimal Overflow - Silent and Failsafe

Here's a video of it in action with sound. Watch the whole video (like 2 mins long): YouTube - Bean Animal's Overflow

The post was "split" due to performance issues, here's the start of it:
Silent and Failsafe Overflow System - Reef Central Online Community

But, have a look at this reply and you will come across the "2 drain pipe" solution.
Page 35, about 3/4 of the way down, a reply by TheFishMan65.
Silent and Failsafe Overflow System - Page 35 - Reef Central Online Community

As he mentions 2 drains are hard to adjust without both pipes being tied together. From what I can see in your pics, your drains are separate in the sump.

Read further down that page I suggested, and there is more info on how you can use your 2 drains to create 1 Full Siphon and 1 Emergency drain.

BTW, I love the way your plumbing came out. A nice clean design.

Re: My 1st Father's Day Gift

Have a look at this thread for a solution to your noise:
Silent and Failsafe Overflow System - Page 35 - Reef Central Online Community

About 2/3 the way down the page, post #867. Start reading past that post and you will see some replies with people using 2 drains only.

And when you get the time, read the whole thread, lots of great info in there.

Anyways, using the BeanAnimal concept, with only 2 drain pipes, you lose the one aspect of the 3rd channel Failsafe pipe, but you will end up with a silent system. And since you are using 1.5" pipe, you should be able to flow 2500+ gph. (not that you are looking to get that much flow as I read earlier in your thread). His system is extremely flexible.

Most noise complaints about his system are that people can hear the skimmer now that they have the plumbing installed

Re: My 1st Father's Day Gift

Tonight will be picture time! On Saturday everything was moved from my 14 gallon Biocube to this tank. The move went well, every coral was open by Saturday evening. The colors look so much better under the T5 lighting as compared to the PCs in the Biocube. On Sunday evening I brought home a yellow watchman...I've wanted one since I set up the Biocube but ended up with a firefish as I couldn't find a yellow watchman that looked healthy and I got impatient. This time I was able to find a nice, healthy looking YWG and brought it on home. So far he's been a bit camera shy but if he's out tonight I'll get a picture.

I also want to comment on the ATO I set up. Using an aqualifter pump, a 5 gallon bucket, a bit of airline, and a float switch unit from autotopoff.com I was able to create an ATO system for less than $70. I'm very impressed by the simplicity of the system and it works great!

As promised...

These eagle eyes looked almost brown under the PCs, now look at them...

This is my very first coral in its new home...

Here's the new edition to the tank...

And here's a picture of the finished sump...

Re: My 1st Father's Day Gift

i just went through your thread...what kind of engineer everything seems to flow like a ME, sorry i sell to engineers all day long, my one concern would be the steel clamps that you use to hold the pipes, i may have some alternatives that you might be interested in that i can have sampled out to you if your interested. I will look at the parts tomorrow and i'll post some pics for you if your interested.

anyways everything looks great!

Re: My 1st Father's Day Gift

I'm an electrical/computer engineer...so not an ME but not too far off. Why should I be concerned about the steel clamps, rust? They are on the backside of the stand and shouldn't be exposed to a large amount of water/salt spray. But, I'm always open to suggestions on how to make things better, so what do you suggest?
