| Angel Girl's Daddy ![]() | hey mark im frankie ive been following your thread for a bit and i am very impressed with what you have done! im building a 120 glass that i drilled for a closed loop and installed a diy coast to coast overflow box with the helpful input from mojo and nikki. there is something im curious about your tank. How do you like the starboard bottom and how it grew over with coraline? witfull and i were talking and came up with the idea of useing black acrylic for the job. but i really want to know your opinion also. your doing a wonderful job on your tank dude! it's a great thread you got going. thanks ![]() Last edited by Frankie : 03-19-2005 at 08:23 AM. |

| Plate Coral ![]() | frankie the starboard bottom has worked out real well and I don't have any regrets in going that direction but instead of starboard I used cutting board from U.S. plastics, from what I understand it is basically the same stuff. it grew over in coralline algae quite quickly it took about two months and it was pretty much covered in coralline algae. now on using a piece of acrylic on the bottom I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work I kinda like the idea of the black acrylic I think it might look little better. as long as the acrylic sheets you are using is thick enough so it doesn't flex or bend I think it should be ok.the main purpose of using the starboard is to remove any pressure points that the rock will place on the bottom of the tank and help to absorb any impacts from falling rock,I would think acrylic would help do the same thing.

| Plate Coral ![]() | Gina Here's a couple pictures I recently took of my tank , I can happily say that I haven't had any hair algae for six weeks now. I removed some of my old rock that I thought was contributing to my nitrate problem. I still have a higher nitrate level than I would like have, it averages around 1.0 to 2.0 ppm and that is with doing 70 gal. water changes every two weeks. I would like to try to get my nitrate down to 0.2ppm. I am beginning to question if my protein skimmer is up to the job. the collection cup doesn't seem to fill up as much as I think it should. my bio-load is 2 clown fish, 1 clown tang, 1 achilles tang, 1 powder blue tang, 1 mandarin, 1 strawberry pseudochromis?. now I am trying determine if I should add more Live rock to get closer to a pound and a half to 2 lbs per gallon. or replace my protein skimmer with a better model. I've been looking Euro-reef protein skimmers and they appear to be real foam makers! the cs8-5 model which is good to 300 gal. has me drooling. I can't afford to do both of right now , just trying determine which route to go and which one would be more beneficial.

| Moderator ![]() | Doesn't look like much. Have you tried making any adjustments? Are you also sure that the test kit you are using is accurate? If I had my choices between a bigger, better skimmer.....or more rock? I would have to lean towards the skimmer. But, I would try and make sure there wasn't something I could try and tweak with the old skimmer first. Nice to see you though. I haven't seen you in awhile!!! |

| The Wand Geek was here. ;) ![]() | Awesome work getting rid of the hair algae! Your tank looks very clean... super coralline growth!!! I think I'd upgrade the skimmer before adding more rock.

| Angel Girl's Daddy ![]() | I have to agree with Gina Mark. It looks like its not foaming much. can you tweak it at all? Maybe get a bigger pump for it? That skimate looks thick and dark, that tells me your dry skimming. Mine has a thin look and fills half the cup in four days. I run it wet. Also I see the neck is coated good with skimate residue. On mine, if I keep it clean the bubbles dont pop before getting to the top and overflow. I would try cleaning it more before getting a new one.Is the bubble chamber fille with tons of bubbles? If not you might want to see why and try to get it to inject more bubbles. And if it is producing tons of them, id keep the throat to the cup cleaner and see if that helps. hope I helped you some. good luck ![]() |
