The Amazing 100

Well it is not so amazing YET. I am getting a 100 gallon acrylic tank and will be building a stand/cabinet for it. My wife says that we can set it up in the living room so it realy has to look good as everone who visits will see (make me happy). It is a mess right not but I am sure it will clean up nice. I have some ideas of how I want to stock it but nothing set in stone. I want it as mostly soft corals. I also have a couple fish I want to put in it selected, but more research is needed. I would like a Lavender tang, and a Psycodelic Manderin. What I have found on the manderin is that I will need a good pod culture for it so he will have to wait longer for the pods to grow. Also I do not yet know what hight I want the tan to sit at. I will be welding a subframe together for the tank to sit on then a wooden cabinet around that. These are just basic plans right now. I just wanted to get this started and maybe get some input. Shaun

Sounds like a plan.
Is the tank reef ready? What filtration plans do you have?
Be sure to give us some pics.

Re: The Amazing 100

Rdd think long and hard about stand height. I had mine made extra tall "compared to many others" and have gotten so many compliments of it's height. The drawback is it's height LOL! Working on it is a challenge but forunately I have APE arms which helps a lot.

The benefits of a taller stand:
  • Puts the majority of the TANK at eye level
  • Gives extra room in stand for taller equipment (taller skimmer ect)
  • Makes working under the cabinet so much easier
  • Makes running plumbing easier due to longer runs and gentler turns/angles

The drawbacks are:
  • Maintenance is more challenging especially with a taller tank

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

I will be running a sump and maybe even a seperate fuge. The tank is reef ready but was used as a FO tank before.

Re: The Amazing 100

Thank you Al. I was going to shoot out some questions about stand highth. My wife wants it low enough for her to do stuff in it, I just do not want it on the floor, LOL. I also want to make certian it is both easy to get into all areas without a lot of monking around and yet "kid" safe. Lot of thinking, research and planning to happen. Shaun

Re: The Amazing 100

Our other tanks have all been "Normal" height and we both agreed that a taller stand would be better. I wouldn't change it one single inch.

Re: The Amazing 100

Well there has been a lot of discussion about the stand. The only thing that has been decided is that the end has to serve a second purpose as a table at the end of the couch. Now, do i want to center the tank in the cabinet or do I want it on one end? I have been searching BigAl's thread on how he had his done so I can show the wife just what I am talking about with it on one end but this will be about in the center of the living room and how everything looks together is real important. Also I will be doing the construction with a friend so between the two of us we should be able to get it done in a weekend so I want the plans perfect before we even get any lumber. Also should i hide the seperate fuge or let it be a part of the display? The system will involve at least three tanks so plumbing will be loads of fun. Ok I think that is it for questions right now. Shaun

Re: The Amazing 100

The stand would be kinda tall to use as a table, but not a bar. That would be kinda cool to have a built-in bar as part of a stand.

Re: The Amazing 100

You could just attach a lower portion to the end, at the proper height. Put a nice top on it...maybe marble, or tile...I imagine it could look very very nice...

Re: The Amazing 100

Just my short 2 cents. A taller stand lets you put a bigger skimmer under it. it seems as though all the big skimmers are too tall.

Re: The Amazing 100

I have thought about the skimmer thing. I planned the cabinet so that if I get a skimmer that is more than the 33" allowed for it then the end will allow me to use mor space for the skimmer. I have also been working on how I want the sump and the fuge to sit. Do you tink that a ten gallon refugium will be good enough? I have enough space planned that I can fit a tank for the refugium that is almost as big as the 55. I do aventualy want to get a manderin so I want to make sure that I can grow enough pods for it. I should also be able to get some pics up soon. Shaun
