A Reef for xx - 90g Reef

Finally decided to start my chronicle of what will be my 90 gallon reef aquarium and will be posting everything here as I go. I haven't really gotten down a stocking list or what corals im going to get yet and I'm hoping by posting here I will get all the help I need to start my reef succesfully. Right now, All I have for my tank is just the tank basically, the stand is on its way and the skimmer too.

What I have:
-90g Oceanic Reef ready tank

What's coming:
-Stand
-Skimmer, which is the ASM G-2 Protein Skimmer w/ Sedra 3500 Pump

My Plans so far are:
-To build a sump with a 30g glass tank (need help with design and plumbing)
-Have my stepdad who works on construction help me make artificial rock to seed with real live rock, suggestions on what type of cement to use and how to actually make the rock lol?
-The only fish I really want on my stocking are Yellow Tang and... any suggestions on others?

What I need help on:
-What corals are easy to start.
-What type of lighting to get. (I want one that covers wide range of corals even if it requires high lighting)
-What type of return pump to use for my tank and other equipment like powerheads ect. please suggest.

Thats all I can think of now to start the chronicle I'll be adding to it as I go in the next few months since I can't buy everything I need at once. I'll also be posting pictures as soon as I get my camera to connect to my computer again >_<

Portland cement works for "making" your artificial rocks. Just make sure it fully cures BEFORE putting it in your tank. There is a thread here that give directions for building a sump, I used them to great success. Just look in the DIY threads. Also I am a good example of why you need to go slow, after 4 weeks I stocked my tank, guess what, it was not ready so please remember to take it slow and easy. Dont forget the test kits. Shaun

Sounds like you are off to a great start. Since you are going with mostly man made rock be sure to give the tank extra time to cycle. The bacteria will need time to populate on the new rock.
90g is a nice size. I really love mine.
For sump ideas check out melevsreef.com He as some great examples and ideas.

I'll check that link out and I'm planning to use about 70 pounds of artificial rock and 40 pounds of real live rock.

I won't be rushing this since I know how it goes with FW, if you rush things.

A great fixture for that tank is the 48" Coralife Pro. Either the 150 or 250 MH. With this high lighting, depending on your locations ambient temperature , you may need a chiller. Another nice, but expensive lighting fixture is the Solaris I4.-What type of return pump to use for my tank and other equipment like powerheads ect. please suggest.
A mag 9 or 10 would suffice for a return pump. For intratank flow take a look at the costly but awesome EcoTech Vortech pumps. 2 in that 90 will rock!

Re: A Tank for xx - 90g Reef

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, i can't believe how expensive the lighting is it will probably be the most expensive thing i buy.

Im really excited about this project of mine and I cannot wait to start putting everything together. My poor tank is sad and empty sitting in my living room waiting to be set up.

Re: A Tank for xx - 90g Reef

You're right, the lighting is the most expensive and important piece of equipment for a reef tank.

Just remember to take it slow. Reef tanks are like fine wines, they get better with age!
