Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

The HOB overflows aren't that noisy anyway, at least the ones that I have had are that way.

Not good enough, needs to be silent or it will be put on a 12/12 cycle. Thank you for sharing that.

My only concern is the skimmer st this point.

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

Ya know what I just thought of? My skimmer pump doesn't have a soft start. I can't be cycling it even if it will skim on a cycle because starting the pump daily will kill it quicker. I WILL NOT SLEEP IN THE SAME ROOM AS IT, so a basement sump is fore sure ( unless other ideas come ).

Now on the basement sump idea;
I will have to lay plumbing around the baseboard of the room to get over to the vent witch is the only access to the basement. I don't have faith in any overflow/plumbing being silent ( the plumbing will be run right under my pillow ) so the sump may be on a 12/12 cycle with the skimmer just skimming sump water for the night.

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

I just don't see a sump on a cycle without causing problems like cyano and such Paul.I think the basement sump idea is a good one though. If I were you I would use schedule 80 for the overflow pipes. They will be much quieter. Also, if you use the right size you should be able to make it silent. Most drain noise issues is because of over sized piping.
Now for the pumps. Little Giant pumps are noisy. I have been through many of them and I have yet to find one that was silent what so ever. Even the one on my return now is frigin annoying. I recommend going with an ampmaster pump. Both of mine i am running you need to tough to tell it is on

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

As always the product you recommenced looks to be better than most others. However they are above my price range unless the smallest model would work, I could not find much info on them.

Even though the return pump will be in the basement the nose puts the Little giant off the list.
Thanks Frankie

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

Well Iv disused flow ( just need to get some plumbing figured out ), placement, sump and filtration, lighting, and noise, but the stand I have been working on silently.

Of course after building one for my FW ( almost done with it ) I simply cannot buy a production stand. I will be building this if Steve decides to let me live after pitching it.

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

It might be easier to move your bed and just have the tank beside the vent instead of dealing with all the associated plumbing, not to mention head loss for the return.

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

And few shoots of the model so we can discus the frame;
Its to be constructed out of 2x4s and 4x4s, I don't nee to point those out for you. On top of all of them will sit a 1x4 and then the 1/5" ply.

The first shoot is of the back. The two 4x4 legs are seen and above them the two thin white layers are the 1x4s and ply.

2nd;
We can see the top of the frame well here. The 4x4 that runs through the center brace is unaffected by the 2x4s of the center brace.

3rd;
This is a close up from #2. The top of the front leg is what we are looking at. The notched 4x4 is missing its corner because of the beveled corner of the stand, see the external pic in my previews post to see what I mean about the beveled corner of the stand. Those corners made designing the frame difficult as a leg would normally go there. The leg had to be moved back, meaning the edge of the tank would been hanging over it, causing stress on the ply. I used a 4x4 for the front member to get some real wood under the front edge of the tank. The legs it sits on are 2x4 so the whole 4x4 is not supported. I put the center brace in to help, the center brace supports the front, under the tank and the legs support the back. This will put stress on the 4x4.
The top side members are 4x4 too for the same reasons.

If you think you see a problem let me know.
I can grab more shoots if you need me too.

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

Absolutely not. I spent a long time getting everything to fit in my room. I like things this way too! The horizontal plumbing dose not count for much as far as head loss.

I don't know if there is something against linking to this site, but here goes. Link to a head loss calculator.

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

In post #68 I was going to mention stand and electrical. I forgot electrical. I am planing another electrical panel like the one I going to do in my FW stand. But scene this system will in two places ( basement sump ) things change.

The FW one is more like a power strip, a series of switches and outlets, a few of witch are on timers.

I will need control in both places. Some components ( like lights and skimmer ) will be exclusive to one site but others like return pump I will have to use two 3 way switches ( like a hall light controlled by two switches ). In that situation power will only be supplied from one site. To eliminate the possibility of pig tailing two wires together witch each receive power from a different site ( causing problems with the breakers ) one site will be powered from the other. Witch site will receive power from the hose is not decided. I will be using 14AWG wire except in the light witch will be 16.

Re: renaissance glorieuse; A reef chronicle

I am going to buy an used 50g for the sump from Dobejazz.

I am also planning a Blueline HD 40. The amp masters seem alot better but these are more affordable.
