looking good. the scape is awesome i always like the open sand in the middle. do you have any issues with your hawkfish and your shrimp. i've always wanted a hawkfish, but heard they like to eat shrimp.

thanks...im really happy with this rock setup too, but i really want a bigger tank lol.

When I first got the hawk, I had a scarlet cleaner and a blood shrimp. He would attack the scarlet cleaner all the time, until the cleaner eventually went into hiding and later died. However, the hawkfish never attacked the blood shrimp once the entire time they were together (the blood died later of idk what).

Now, I have the CBS, a new blood, and a purple reef lobster in with the hawk. the cbs and the lobster have been in the tank a couple months now with no problems, and once again, the hawk does not mess with the blood shrimp at all. However, I will catch the hawk eating a blue leg hermit from time to time and I also watch him eat pods off rocks all the time. In the beginning, he would attack my arrow crab from the back, but the crab has since learned to keep his back to the rocks or wall and I havnt seen a scuffle between them in over a month now

Re: 37g Build (PICS!!)

thanks. i think the minute i set up my 55g i wanted to upgrade lol. its all part of the addiction. i don't have any hermits in my tank and i don't really mind if the hawk eats a few snails they are cheap enough to replace. i've heard mixed things about them with shrimp so i'm glad to hear your's has behaved mostly. i don't blame him for attacking an arrow crab, those things freak me out they like dam spiders.

My hawk never messed with any snails, hes more into the clawed inverts. I also figured that he would attack the cbs, so I just made sure that I bought one big enough so that it would be able to fend for itself. My hawk is just about 2" long so, any shrimp in future will have to be at least that to stay in the tank with him. However, the blood is considerably smaller than the cbs and the hawk doesnt mess with him. I guess he recognizes the color from the wild to be not a threat or food.

Either way, the hawk is my second favorite thing in the tank so I dont mind sacrificing a few crabs to keep him around.

Do you have a chronicle of your tank on this site?

I added the ATS (algae turf scrubber) and that pretty much killed it. After about 3 weeks of it running, I could see the HA getting weaker and weaker in the DT. Then at about 2 months, there was about 1/4 the amount of algae. At that time I decided I wanted to change my rock setup as my fish were not using the whole height of the tank. So, I took out all the rock, freshwater dipped all of it, and scrubbed it with a toothbrush to get rid of the remaining algae. Its been about 3 weeks since then and everything is look great.

Funny thing is, about 2 and a half months ago, I came to the forums to see how much I could sell all my equipment for because I just couldnt deal with the HA anymore after 5+ months of an algae filled tank (kelp forest as most of my friends put it). While i was doing a search to see what others had been selling my sump for, I came across that ATS thread and decided to give it another shot. thank god I did and thank god for SantaMonica lol.

~thanks for all the comments on the tank guys, I appreciate it~

Re: 37g Build (PICS!!)

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the info. I have been looking at making an ATS for my tanks because of the nitrates levels but haven't done it yet. I have the parts, just haven't had time to put it all together. I think I will wait until I merg them into my 180 and do one for the 180 and my BC 14 at the office. The change you got is impressive and I'm glad it worked. It would be a shame to loose you from the hobby. I'll have to share your experience with a friend of mine who has a 55 that looks like yours did.

Just make sure you read up. go through this thread and follow the directions santa monica gives and it will work like a dream. Light placement, screen material, flow, and regular cleanings are very very important.

I'll answer any questions you guys have about that too.

nitrate and phospate have been at 0 since this has been installed. only 1 water change.
