Re: OK a 65 G Slowly but the best i can make it

i have a question if anyone care to answer. This pit i'm doing filled with rubble . It will have flow going underneath it, and some flow coming out of the pvc that support it. Any thoughs on that , i'm asking, because i was thinking of those nano size rocks i have left over. Which one should i use for that pit. The rubble creates a lot of surface for bacteria and a nice nursery for pods to reproduce in.Does anybody see a problem, down the road with it???????

Re: OK a 65 G Slowly but the best i can make it

I wrote in your poll thread, but I do think the nano rubble may hold nitrates down the road. I don't have experience, but I for some reason thought that was the reason people weren't using rubble in there fuges. Again, no experience just thinking!

Re: OK a 65 G Slowly but the best i can make it

basile,I don't know but assume the rubble wouldn't be a problem with it off the bottom like it is gonna be,
I think with it piled on the sand,it becomes a detritus trap, like jgking21 is concerned with

That was my thinking as well, off the bottom and with waterflow, from the powerheads and from the holes in the pvc underneath the rubble, coming from the return pump. There would be about 1 1/2 inch to 2 inch of rubble in that area. The pit will be about 4 inch above the bottom and 1 1/2 inch above the sand. But since i never did this never know what are the pitfalls. Thanks guys for your time on this.

Re: OK a 65 G Slowly but the best i can make it

Today i'll be applying this to the foam. The foam as to cure at least 24 hour.In my case i was busy with the other desing so its been 72 hours.

This epoxy can be a bit thick , so you can use some rubbing alcohol to dilute it.it has to be 99% alcohol, not the 70%; there's too much water in that one. Most drugstores cary it, some you have to ask for it , and they'll order it for you.

I found this in a hobby shop; they use it on miniature planes styrofoam wings to render them impervious to water i think.

No , i'm waiting for the good weather. I need a good day of at least 70 oF for the resin to cure properly. And the weather as been dismal for the last 3 days. So i'm waiting. I've contacted my main supplyer, a good guy, he's giving me an estimate for the return pump and for the pipe work he'll be doing to my tank. I don't want to touch that yet . Not enough experienced for that. And if its in the budget , i'll do it and you guys should see it underwater before i leave. Even if i'm gone, i've got my buddy to watch over the other two tanks and he can shut it off if any leaks happens.

I hope the weather warms up for you,I'd love to see it all in the tank under water before you leave, but if I have to wait, that will be fine too,no need to rush it,you'll have plenty of time, when you return,to get it going.

its great you got a friend to watch over it,but if it were me,I'd want to be there for a few days at least with it......I'd go over any hose clamps and bulkheads or what ever, just to make sure everything was secure, before I left

I've got several boxes of PVC scrap pieces, where I've tried doing my own plumbing, eventually I learned to piece everything together first, mark each piece where I want it,then take it back apart 1 piece at a time and glue it.........oh and get threaded ball valves, there reusable that way

Thanks , yes i hope the weather clears up. As for piecing pvc together i don't doubt i would be able too. But its the other elements i'm not familiar with; how to hook up the skimmer properly and balance the water levels in the sump , those kinda things. So when its done by my friend, he'll explain it and i'll understand it better. Right now its a bit confusing for me. But once i see it done i'll be all right for repairs and gaging my water levels by myself. Just need to see how its done first. I'm much more visual than literal. And i'll have time to look at it for i hope at least a week. I don't expect to leave before the end of the month or so.

I'm doing my resin now. Yuk , thats sticky.... Normaly you just apply the resin, but upon this i add crush coral to make the foam more rock like. And guess what you get glued to it lol. Taking a break now. I can't explain how to work with resin and crush coral. You have to do it to see how it reacts. You have to mesure precisely equal parts of resin and hardener. If too much hardener you have a more rubber like texture, so they say on the box. I did my mesurement perfect. It dries in about 30 min so be fast!. Will update later with pics bye now.

I'm finished, oolala looks cool and rocky like. Waiting for it to cure and then will put in the tank for a visual look. Before the main set up.

Re: OK a 65 G Slowly but the best i can make it

That what i've done today. I first put the sculpture in a baque, to capture the crush coral i'm going to apply on the sticky resin. I got 30 minutes before it hardens.I sprinkle generously with a spoon onto the resin and
leave the surplus there until dry. Then i brushed it away clean to leave the piece inprinted with the coral to hide most of the foam.

All done , i'm letting them dry and tomorrow will set them up in the tank for a look over. And see if there's anything else to do to them , mistakes to correct or overlooks. There are some spots i haven put foam or hide the zip ties, because i plan on covering those specific spots with frags and maybe coral already on rocks to fill up.
