Interresting concept. Most of the vids are freshwater. Good thing cause I have no idea how you would scrape the corraline off that thing.

Re: New Horizons By Frankie

I am changing salt next week. I have been using TMPR for the last two years and dealing with po4 because of it. After doing a bit a reading over the last few months this is a common problem with that salt. My po4 is unreadable now because of the clams and little to no water changes. With zeovit I will be doing weekly 5% changes. I will be going over to what most zeo reefers are using. RBS. Aquarium Specialty
I am on day 4 now and already see changes in my corals! I did not think to see anything for the first few months but polyp extension is very obvious on all the acro's already. It must be the PVC Aquarium Specialty I have a millepora that never showed extension since I bought it and this morning they looked like hairs coming out of it!
I will also be changing over to ZEOvit ZEOcarbon. Aquarium Specialty
Personally imo carbon is carbon. But all the major zeo tanks out there are using this stuff so i will also. No need to cut any corners, the cost is no different from what i am using now. That's it for updates. I will post test results tomorrow.

Yup, I agree, carbon is carbon, as long as it doesn't leach PO4!

Wow that salt is not cheap, but I guess with the money you have put into this system its worth it to have the best.
Frankie now that you have switched over to the zeo thing when you buy new corals and or fish will the QT time take longer so they can get use to the zeo?? Also is there a site you would suggest for someone that wants to learn more about zeo??

Re: New Horizons By Frankie

Actually with this salt you do smaller water changes so the cost is the same if not less.
Acclimating corals and fish stay the same as any other system. Corals leaving the system though have to go to other zeo systems. They cannot be reverted back to a typical reef system.
Here is a link to my thread on a Zeovit dedicated website.
About my system - Page 3 - zeovit.com I spend a lot of time reading there.

Re: New Horizons By Frankie

Nice post Jason!
Now, can you provide the data that go's along with that chart? Is there a thread or article about it explaining what makes certain carbon work better then others? Thanks for the heads up dude.

Re: New Horizons By Frankie

The chart is all I have . I would GUESS that the ability for one to have better color removing properties than another would simply be chemical makeup of the carbon? or possibly purity? Boomer used this table in one of his posts,.... I saved it. Maybe he can shed some light on the subject?

Re: New Horizons By Frankie

Thanks Robert for your efforts
I have it all up and running pretty well now. I will post a drawing tonight with my test results.
In that drawing i do not see how the water will go directly to the DT from the zeo sump without going through the skimmer first though.

Re: New Horizons By Frankie

There is a baffle that separates the skimmer section from the rest of the main sump. The water can't backflow over the baffle, and gets released next to the main circ pump's draw.

Re: New Horizons By Frankie

Sorry, I have been slacking on the testing this week due to work and my family's upcoming trip this Thursday. I will get on it Friday after they are gone.
The salt showed up today along with the carbon. I will start my water changes on Saturday 5% once a week. I have a two more weeks before the carbon change out.
Other then that all is well. I continue to see better polyp extension and the clams are doing great. I think they are my biggest worry and what I look at the moment I get home.
The zeo reactor is starting to produce a visible mulm. It is a milky cloud when I pump it at night while running.

I saw that chart a while back and used it to select Marineland as my go to carbon for as long as I have been using carbon in an SW tank. This despite the fact that I have pallets, yes pallets, of granular activated carbon in my shop for water treatment systems. But, it can't be as good as Marineland right?

... So this discusion came up on another board I frequent and the argument was, the leaching PO4 is the issue.

So, I soaked my go to Marineland in RODI water along side my US Filter 830 GAC for the same time, then tested PO4 with a D-D PO4 kit. Both weere non-detectable for PO4.

... So, I pulled my mesh bags of $29 a gallon sized container of Marineland carbon out and tossed ina bag of the US Filter stuff. Quite frankly the US filter stiff was larger in grain size but very, very, I mean very clean. Minimal rinsing ready it for my sump in minutes. I belive the my water is just as, if not more clear, with the US Filter GAC, and because it is CHEAP!, I'll change it more often.

If I am not mistaken, the article I originally saw that chart in also mentioned that carbon is only effective for the first few days, then it should be removed or changed, else wise it become a nitrate farm. At $30 a gallon, it'll stay at least a week, thank you! Now, at les than $10 a gallon's worth, I can change it every other day for the same cost.

... I am OK with my US Filter 830 GAC, thanks
