Re: Akwar'eum Too

I just ordered my live rock. I only had enough left in the account to get 380#, I guess that will have to do to start. I still have about 125# in Akwar'eum but it's covered up with bubble algae. Do I scrub the daylights out of the rock to remove it and use it anyway? Should I even use the water from the old system? I don't want any of this BA in Akwar'eum Too. I'd like to get at least some TB rock when I get more cash in the budget.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

I was shooting for 700#. I have fallen short due to budget constraints... so I would like at least 500# to start with but that means I'll have to use the rock from the old system. But I am determined not to let bubble algae get started in this one so I need to know how to treat the old rock to get it off and keep it off.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

That sucks about the old rock. I haven't read a sure fire way to get rid of it except boiling the rocks. Too many chances for spores. Some have used superglue to lay down on top of the bubble algae then rip it of with the algae intact. How infested are the old rocks?

Re: Akwar'eum Too

I would definitely use the old rock. My buble algae completely disappeared when I got rid of the nitrates and phosphates and added three emerald crabs. The BA is definitely fixable. Like Victor said, boiling the rock wouldn't hurt anything either since you have plenty of LR to reseed it.

I wouldn't use any of the water from the old tank though, nor the sand.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

I like Terry's homeopathic approach. It's natural, fight it from a natural approach. Remove the food and it will go away. Or just pluck it off by hand.

How bad could it be?

Re: Akwar'eum Too

I'll use the rock for sure but had decided no water or sand already. If I can figure out how to boil it I'll do that, otherwise I'll scrub it til it begs for mercy. Gail has a gigantic soup pot, but I may have to use it and ask forgiveness rather than permission! Victor, the bubble algae is amazingly thick, especially since I haven't been there to keep it in check. It's 5:45 here...off to Lowes for parts to get the skimmer hooked up and running today.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

i think if you just took the time to flick it all off... and then use super glue on the extremely hard to get ones... that would work.. just pluck them off.. then rinse the rock off over a bucket and i think you would be fine...

Re: Akwar'eum Too

I would boil the old live rock, scrub, boil again, and rinse in salt water to eliminate the spores.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

Thanks Sarah, I hear ya but think this calls for more drastic measures.

Craig, I think that's the way I'll go.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

Well CRAP! I dropped a tool on the top of my skimmer and knocked a freakin' hole in it and cracked the acrylic. Rather than destroying it to make a new top I am trying to glue patches over the holes. It looks like some jacklegged doofus-headed boob built it now. I very nearly cried over this stupid thing. Then we watched a movie called "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead" and I felt much better about everything. I have NO PROBLEMS compared to the characters in that story! Sheesh! Great acting though. Be warned though, Marissa Tomei gets naked in it... a lot,... and that's OK... but so does Phillip Seymour Hoffman,.. and I really didn't need to see that let me tell ya! Well, I'll test the skimmer tomorrow after it dries overnight. I hope it works!
