| Tridacna maxima | Re: Akwar'eum Too Well, I've got my contractor best friend coming over tomorrow night to look things over and give advice. We'll see what he says. I contacted Tenacor about my tank today and I think they had lost the order or something because they couldn't find anything about it while I was on the phone with them. Then they call me back with a new ship date of June 18th , that's three more weeks I have to wait now. Blast it all! I've got Jack looking into it for me though so maybe he'll deliver better news. We went to Red Lobster after picking up the gasket material and some new comforters for the guest room (at half price I might add!). It's amazing how delicious some of our tank critters are! I couldn't find Weldon locally and my framing supply vendor was out of it so I got their other plastics glue. They said it works great. I think it's just super superglue. Does anyone think that will work as well or should I wait and get the Weldon? I can have some by next Monday, but don't want to wait that long. I got my gasket material today and a punch to cut the holes for the screws. I should have plenty of material for the other things I want to build. Here is the flange with gasket made and installed... ![]() This is a photo of the collection cup (upside down of course) being glued together. If I decide this glue won't work for the main body, it should at least work for the cup... ![]() I made the riser support, it's not installed yet but I held it in place for the photo, here it is (sorry the pic is blurry)... ![]() Okey Dokey, that's it for tonight.

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: Akwar'eum Too I thought the deal with acrylic glues was that they kind of "melt" the two pieces together? If that is the case I wouldn't trust superglue. Hopefully someone with some real experience with this will chime in. ![]()

| Watch this Ma! | Re: Akwar'eum Too What is the "other plastic glue"? I know that weldon basically melts the pieces and it reforms into a single piece. I've broken a piece of acrylic in the middle and the seam never let go. With a ship date for the tank being 3 weeks from now, I vote for waiting for the weldon and using it.

| Brunt of all Jokes~ ![]() | Re: Akwar'eum Too There are several types of glue used with acrylic. The main type and most common are solvent adhesive. They are available thickened and water thin. The water thin is used in common fabrication. It uses capillary action to flow between the pieces of acrylic. The chemical is actually a solvent and breaks down the plastic surface, allowing the pieces to flow together. The solvent evaporates and you have a beautiful seam. We use methylene chloride, (MDC), as our solvent adhesive. We mix it with a small amount of another chemical that allows us to adjust for temperature. It is applied using an applicator bottle that has a needle tip. Edge preparation prior to glue application is of utmost importance. Your final seam will never be better than your beginning edge. We use a joiner to prep the edge for general assembly but a hand scraped finish used on our art quality work yields the best results. |

| Watch this Ma! | Re: Akwar'eum Too I used an orbital sander to get the edge as close to perfect as I could. Then I hand sanded it some more so I could pinpoint the location that needed touched up a little bit. I got it to the point that there was zero light coming from between the edge of acrylic and a straight edge (level).
