Re: Akwar'eum Too

Greg, your honesty is much appreciated. The DIY info is important as we all are challenged at on point or anothet in this hobby. How about a picture of that bad boy in operation?

Re: Akwar'eum Too

Thanks Craig! The thing worked before just not as well as it does now. I can't believe the difference. The way I had the injectors installed must have let escape so the foam was a little dilluted. Frankie caught it right away and made me wonder about it. I never could get the other injectors to work properly so I got new ones and made new housing for them. I'll try to post pics tonight of it working properly. I don't understand how it works so much better now, but it does. I knew with that larger pump it should have been pushing tons of water through and it wasn't, ...well, now it surely is. The weird thing is, the pipe size didn't change but it seems more water is going through it. Ah, what ever the reason, if anyone wants to build one of these things then doing it right the first time would be a good idea!

Re: Akwar'eum Too

I'm thinking about building one. Or should I say, I'm thinking about attempting it.

It would be nice to get rid of my 100g skimmer tub and put one of these monsters in it's place. Then I'd really get the water clean.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

It would perform better on Terry's system then it does on mine. This thing is a gunk eater! Having a reef and predator set up i think the Barr is a perfect skimmer.

Wow! I feel like i owe you an apology Greg. It seems that picture really made a mess of things. I think i will pull it from my thread so it doesn't happen again to someone else. Sorry about all the confusion.
Now post some pictures of yours running!

Re: Akwar'eum Too

OK guys... I got caught up in unexpected Fathers day festivities and didn't even think about posting pictured...nuff said.

So here they are today! I got both injectors working perfectly I think...

because I'm getting nice white foam...

which produces nice brown foam...

which goes into the bucket 'o nasty...

which produces nicely cured rock...

I still have to use the large pump on it though. The little giant still only worked one side. It tried to make both sides work, it's just not quite strong enough.

Frankie- maybe it would be a good idea to replace that photo, I did remember reading that they were upside down after going back through it again, but it had been so long since I read it til I built it that I had forgotten and was going by photos. Just a thought.

Terry, this bad boy would work well for what you've got. Plus it gets ooohs and aaaahs from visitors! Not that you need anything extra to get those...you'd just get more of them.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

Let the sludge making begin!
You might want to seal the top of that 5 gal. bucket with a top and drill a 1/2" hole in the top. I then placed a cut off scrap of 2" acrylic tubing filled with carbon and a floss pad on the bottom to keep the odor at bay.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

It's got a lid Frankie, I just took it off for the photo, but I don't quite understand where the carbon goes. Sorry to be a dunce , do you have a photo?

Re: Akwar'eum Too

You need to drill a hole in the lid to stop back pressure. Also you need a hole in the skimmers cup lid to prevent back pressure also. Back pressure will cause the foam head to collapse. so will pressure from the drain line. I'll get a picture tonight for you of my remote 5 gallon cup. All it is is a hole in the top for venting and a cut off of somthing to hold some carbon over the hole.

Re: Akwar'eum Too

I think I get it.

There is a tiny hole in the top of the collection cup. It's the one I drilled for the nail to cut the circle. How big do I need to make it?

In the collection bucket; so the vent hole is cut in the top of the bucket and the small section of pipe sits over that with floss in the bottom and carbon on top of that...is that right?
