Re: Varga's 300 Gallon In-Wall Build!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you unplug the pumps, do they lose prime though?

Read page 15. It's not your pump but it happens on all centrifical pumps.

oh yeah, takes me like 2 seconds to prime it though. maybe it wont lose prime once the smp is full and the suction pipe is 19" submerged?

John, Im not understanding page 15. sounds like its talking about preventing air from getting in the suction pipe.

OOOPs wrong document. I'll have to dig it up for ya when I get back to the house.

Anyway it was what Steve was talking about, cavitation and the reduction of flow.

Re: Varga's 300 Gallon In-Wall Build!!!!!!!!!!!!

ReefFlo, in their documentation for their Sequence pumps, shows how to plumb pumps so they pull the water up to them. They show a check valve, underwater, to prevent the pump from losing prime. Just something to try I guess.

Re: Varga's 300 Gallon In-Wall Build!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont mind them losing prime, these are 24/7 pumps.

so are you saying theres a difference here because these pumps have less sucktion than push power?

24/7 until you have a power outage, and when the power comes back on, and the pumps come back on... when you are not home...

There is a big difference. Less work for your pump in fig. 1 of your drawing plus you will not loose your prime.

fig. 2 Is a pump working harder than it has to. You will burn more electricity working the pumps this way as well. You will loose your prime when the power gose out and when the power returns may burn up your pumps. I'd hate to read about that.

Re: Varga's 300 Gallon In-Wall Build!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check valve will keep the prime, but your pumps will still be overworking. Plus check valves will just add to the work.

It's up to you.

Re: Varga's 300 Gallon In-Wall Build!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you test the pumps like you have it and then switch it and let us know. Maybe all us naysayers are wrong. Would need to know electric draw and gph to be fair. I saw your pic showing it working but still wonder at what cost. Also the power outage would scare me if it can't reprime without help.

In figure #1, if sump is brought up to the level of the tank and the pump stays low in the loop you should not have back flow either way and keep the prime at all times.

Re: Varga's 300 Gallon In-Wall Build!!!!!!!!!!!!

i agree with the majority Varga, every manual i've read says the pumps shoudnt pull water up from a source because it can cause cavitation in the pump which would cause premature wear on the pump. the pump has to be fed water because they are designed to push water not pull.
