| Plate Coral | 70 gallon chronicle in the works. I am 19 and im going to be needing a hip replacment. I have been putting th surgery off for almost a year now and my parents have been on my case like mad. I Asked them that if I get my hip replaced i could set up a new tank to watch while im recovering. They said yes! so im going with either a 55 standard or a 70 tall. I will probally be using a HOB fuge since im kinda scared of flooding my room if the power goes out. Ill keep you updated with everything but now we will be looking at tanks and surgery set for late july. Wish me luck

| Acropora | Re: 70 gallon chronicle in the works. I will tell you out of personal experience not to go with a "tall" tank unless it's a monster or you only put small fish and mostly corals in it. I have a 47 high and, not only do you have to use stronger lights to reach the bottom of the tank (thus creating heat issues), the only fish I know that swims vertically is a jellyfish. I would go with a 55...there are better possibilities than a 70 tall. |

| Madame Klanganator | Re: 70 gallon chronicle in the works. Good luck on your surgery. I'll second what nikki said about a tall tank. My 65g is 24" tall, and while that's not REALLY tall, it's kind of a pain to reach the bottom. I have some back problems so I can see it being an issue at times. The more shallow 55 standard will most likely be easier for you to maintain while you're recovering. Of course, this is jmo! Keep looking at different sizes, too. Maybe there's another size out there that's more shallow than that tall 70 but with more gallonage than a 55. Have fun researching!

| Plate Coral | Re: 70 gallon chronicle in the works. ok im going to look at tanks tomorrow afternoon. here are the lights i am trying to decide one way or the other. 48'' 529 watts. Im worried about heat though. Aquarium Lighting for Reef Aquariums: Outer Orbit Pro Series HQI/T-5/LED Lights or this one 48" - 432 watts t-5's. less light but i would assume cooler. T-5 Aquarium Lighting: Nova Extreme T-5 Fixtures w/Lunar Lights So which should i go for? I will be keeping prettymuch everything except clams. so SPS LPS Shrooms and Zoes. I know i would have to place the harder corals higher in the tank but would both lights be capable of sustaining LPS and SPS?

| Over Achiever | Re: 70 gallon chronicle in the works. You have quite a spread of light loving corals there. For SPS, you'll need MH. Zoas, on the other end of the spectrum, can do well under PCs. You'll want the one with a 150W MH, but the 48" will be too big for a 55 gallon. With the MH you'll have more flexibility on what you can keep, even clams if and when you want one. |

| Cabbage Leather | Re: 70 gallon chronicle in the works. I'd go with a tank that is wider than 12inches. It's a pain to scape narrow tanks and to me 55s just aren't wide enough. I have a 50breeder size tank which is 36x18x18 and I really like the scale. It's wide enough to allow more interesting scapes and also not so tall that you can't get your arm down in there when you need to. All the best on your surgery.....and have fun setting up this tank ! It's going to be fun to watch ! As far as the heating issue.....if you stay with the soft corals you could go with a cooler running light. I use regular pcs over my tank...a 36inch 192watt coralife....and my coral seem fine with that. If your room is already hot, you may have trouble with that come summer....
