Are you considering Nassaurius snails as sand sifters. I recommend them highly!

I second the nassarius. I also have a conch for sand sifting.

I was just checking those out from the link for CUC's in the RS sponsors. I was also thinking Dwarf Planaxis for cleaning under the rock and some dwarf cerith for the LR I might get some limpets for the glass and they look pretty gnarley too.

I just dont know how many I need of each kind.

Do I need more lighting power for these inverts or am I cool with what i got.

Ok so how stupid is this the light I have isn't marked with its wattage so I look at the paperwork that came with it, not on there either

I want a conch but I don't think my tank is big enough ( only 35 gal) and I know conchs get big we collect shells I have one that is almost 10 inches long. Here is a pic.

Never mind the dirt that thing is like 60 years old

That is a HUGE CONCH! WHOA!!!

Inverts don't care about light. What you have now is fine. The light, at this point, is just for you so you can see.

Re: Let's watch my new tank grow

Ok So I think I know what is up with my numbers I think my Nitrites are ending their spike and my nitrates are beginning theirs. The numbers I got today seemed more accurate.

My ammonia is normal at 0 ppm
My pH is 8.2 (I think I will add a little buffer)
My nitrites dropped to 1 ppm
My nitrates spiked at 20 ppm

I am going to do a WC and test again. I will post those in little while.

Re: Let's watch my new tank grow

Well is 12 hours a long enough little bit,

Guys have I got a story for you....

Pull up a get your and grab a cold

Listen to this you are going to with

Well I was doing my water change this afternoon, and I like to keep things kindda clean so I use a vinyl hose to siphon the water into the tank well in order to get a siphon to work the source has to be higher than the destination right. So I place my bucket of clean salt water on the fridge beside my tank (you can see it in my pics) so I get the siphon going and let it run for a moment I turn around to clean the hood and before I event get across the kitchen I hear a crash and then I am standing in water
The siphon was running for about a minute and a half. About a gallon of water actually made it to the tank. The rest flooded my kitchen and my hallway and the bathroom (approx. 4 gals). It might not sound like a lot but trust me it is (I had to clean it while the bf stood back laughing hysterically) There was water on the walls, the table, the door even the blinds were dripping wet. There are only two people living here and we dont have a lot of towels (8). So I had to use all of our towels and the bed sheets to cleanup this catastrophe. I would have used the dirty laundry but I did it all yesterday.

After about 2 hours I finally got everything cleaned up. It looked like I was having a car wash in my kitchen.

Well thats my story

Oh yeah my test results show that I am definitely having a nitrate spike.

Nitrates 40 ppm
Nitrites 1 ppm
Ammonia 0 ppm
pH 8.2
temp 76.6
Salinity 1.022

I might have to do another water change tomorrow.

When should I expect to see the algae bloom that is supposed to follow the cycle?

Re: Let's watch my new tank grow

Today my levels haven't fluctuated at all. All my test were the same as last night. So I think yet another water change is in order. My SG was 1.020 and thats a little low. What is the best way to get the salinity up? I have premixed salt water but i don't have a bag of salt. So should I just watch it for the next couple days and add saltwater when the water level evaporates. Or, should I buy some salt mix and make a concentrated mixture of saltwater?

Re: Let's watch my new tank grow

you could make a concentrated solution of saltwater then drip it into a high flow area. just keep close eye on it and wait a few minutes between adding it so it can mix with the rest of the water and test before you add more. this is the reason i like to mix my own saltwater. you can control the salinity much easier, just be sure to us ro/di water. also keep in mind that as water evaporates, it's just the water that evaporates, not the salt...so the salinity will rise as evaporation occurs.

congrats on the house bath. i did that once but it was the opposite. i let a bucket overflow while draining the tank.
