Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

I have some blasto but not the same type.
Mine was an injured frag when I got it and nothing seems to pick on it in my tank. Maybe Im just lucky? Iunno.
Mine does have one dark spot tho ... Like a former eye/mouth that is all dark instead of looking as it should. Healthy heads are forming all around it. Mine seems to be pretty good about toughing it out in my way less then perfect tank.

Goodluck with the blasto. Sorry I couldnt be more help.

I also have T5s. My blasto looks outward... not up towards the light. I have the M. Not the W. The frag cost me a pretty penny as well... but I really like it and it has been a trooper for me.

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

Well its dead. Theres one or two of the smaller polyps are still hanging on. not sure what happened. Ive moved it high and low, left and right but could not find somewhere where it would be happy...

After i was through with my 4 hour drip acclimation it looked all happy and alive and a week later it is dead.

All levels good. Calcium is at 415-420ish alk. 3.1 meq/l or so.

everyone else in the tank is doing well.

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

Never owned a Blasto, so sorry, can't help. Did you inspect the skeleton for any pests (snails, nudis)? Maybe it was damaged before you bought it?
:-( Sorry about the coral.

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

I havent seen anything on it. It could have been out of water when i go it. but i think i just ripped the inside bag when i opened it.

maybe the switch from halides or whatever at the shipping place to my t5 did it in?

Can light bulbs shift in spectrum so much that new additions fail to make it from better lighting, BUT support current residents because they are slowly and continuously acclimated to the shifted light?

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

The metal halide switch to t5s shouldnt hurt it. If reversed, I could see that hurting it. Sorry.

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

Sometimes corals just die. I've had an acropora bleach out and recover, while a different one just RTN away in a day. There isn't really anything that you can do other than try to provide the best conditions for them.

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

For those of you that care... i am still alive

Also, since my last post i have made near $500 in 2 more xenia harvests...

April first, i decided to experiment.
i removed all my corals(cept a 3x2 inch rock of xenia) and have them in a small 10 gallon tank. The clowns went to a friend of mine for a bit. I have not changed water since the begining of april in the main tank. i know... Bad. I also cut my skimmer off for this period. Yesterday i Spent close to 3 hours (with my wife helping) De-xenia-fying my tank. the weed spread so fast i couldnt handle it in the tank. I had to tear apart my tank to get rid of it. These stalks werent those short OMG im gonna die types of stalks xenia leaves in panic. they were the size of freaking trees... We pulled out over 2 pounds of xenia....

I had the LFS check my water for any and everything. He said the nitrates were pretty high and that my dissolved solids were through the roof. He asked what i did... and i said im growing xenia. The store has offered me a 50 gallon tank and stand along with endless cured liverock to "keep doing what im doing" and be a xenia supply for them. they say they cant keep the stuff nor find a nearby source that can... They give me the supplies and $400 per tank of the stuff.

As much as i want to do it, i cant get passed the idea of killing 100lbs of their liverock and having to pay for it...

Ill be rescaping my 55 and returning all my livestock after i get my par. in check again. hopefully ill be pretty much xenia free in there... ive lost my taste for the stuff.

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

I would have taken the deal but they have to take the risk.
Anyway, that is a lot of money to raise selling xenia. It obviously loves your tank so good luck getting rid of it. Personally I love the stuff but it hasn't taken over everything yet though I do have some pretty large pieces.
Let us know when the scape etc is done. I would love to see the new look.

Re: Carl's 55 Gallon Underwater Inn

Oh.... I havent turned it down yet. They offered yesterday. I tell them ill do it if the assume responsibility.

That is a ton of xenia. After less than a month it took over my tank. i guess if you want xenia you have to keep your tank less than perfect... and if you want a lot of the stuff you need to pretty much nuke the tank.

Maybe i can fit their tank in my shed...
