Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: 55 gallon upgrade!!

OK well.... havent logged on for a while so heres an update.

Begining of may i got my cleanup crew acclimated and tossed them in. the usual.. astrea, nassaris... I also bought an arrow crab, emerald crab (pretty bad existing bubble problem), serpent star. after throwing them in i found out that i had a total of 4 emerald crabs in the tank !!!!!!! first one i find with eggs im pluckin out and well.... the emeralds immediatly came outta hiding. oh well. i kinda like them (for now).

serpant star lasted all of 4 hours before being dismembered <== emeralds

A week or two ago i pulled some of my spreading xenia outta my nano (weed control) and decided to give it a chance in the sun lit + 15 watts corroded flouresants. Its actually pumping in this tank, which it doesnt do in my nano tank. After a couple of days it disappeared and i spotted it later riding around on one of the emeralds... so i plucked it of and superglued it down again. i then let a small piece free float in the tank which is now the emeralds new outfit...

Mom will NOT stick her hand in my nano... After i added the arrow to this tank she plops her whole arm in.. WHAT THE HECK. She has taught the arrow to eat out of her hand (only hers).

I also found some kinda polyp looking things in the tank. Theyre lavenderish small round. I have yet to find any pictures that identify them as 'bad' they dont look like apitasia or the m***** word apitasia... Pics at some point...

i got a call yesterday May 20, 2008 from her talkin about a thin tanish cucumber that fans its head open when it comes outta the sand or a dark crevice. (sounds like a medusa worm to me) i have yet to see it.

She has fallen in love with this hobby. "Turn your tank lights off!!!" has quickly turned into "What else can i put in MY tank."

So i am currently looking at new light fixtures...15 watts doesnt cut it.

Re: 55 gallon upgrade!!

I have three emeralds and two brittles and they leave each other alone. What are the chances that you have a mantis shrimp hiding in your tank?

Darn xenia... I had a small frag in my 120g and it melted. We put a nice frag of it in the 450g, and it melted.

I don't know what the problem is but I can't keep xenia. We love how it pulses too.

And yes, updated pics would be great! And congratulations on getting enough cool stuff to get your mom really excited about the hobby too. There isn't anything else like it.

Re: 55 gallon upgrade!!

Thanks for the update. Sounds like a nice CUC going there.

SUCKS about the "Brittle" but maybe something else "took it out" and the crabs were just "doing what they do".

Keep up the good work

Its possible i havent seen or heard one yet, but i saw the emeralds playin tug of war with the poor guy. i got the emeralds off but by that time the star had half a leg and 3/4 of its center mass left. he crawled into the rock never to be seen again. no jumps in ammonia or other levels....

actually it was a serpent. the brittle ive seen occasionally... hes the one that lasted 4 hours smashed in bag of drying live rock... and then 2 days in icecream bucket hotel, then about 2 weeks in a makeshift brig in my nano along with a hawk fish in the other cell. they were then added to the 55 as the first residents. i saved lives

Re: 55 gallon upgrade!!

Update time... I coulda sworn i kept this thing more updated...

So the tank was moved to my new house. I have added a sump/fuge to the tank.

Livestock has pretty much stayed the same. With the additions of:

2 Blue leg hermits Wifes idea pick... If they mess with anything there goin to the sump.
3 head Branching Hammer coral. Again wifes idea but this one i liked a little more.

OH and MORE xenia...

Lets see. Started with $25 2 inch frag... Split to 180 square inches... thats 90, 2 inch frags... times $25.....

wow.
