Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

No doubt! I went through this when I got the sump up and running in the basement for the 120g reef upstairs. Over estimated the amount of water that would drain down so overflowed the sump. Had a leak in a connect in the pvc. All the usual startup pains.

The amount of plumbing that has gone into the 450 is quite extensive compared to the 120. So I wasn't surprised.

I just made a mistake on how to handle the drip leak.

Oh well, it's fixed and we pumped another 40g into it. I'll add another 40g tonight. Another tomorrow morning. Another tomorrow evening. And it should be full by then. As full as I'm going to make it while I cycle rock in it at least. The 300 lbs I ordered should be here Friday. Dr. Mac recommended waiting until their big shipment comes in on Wednesday so they can pull out huge pieces for me.

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

cant wait to see those boulders in your ocean. once you have 450lbs of rock, how much actual water do you think will be in the tank, maybe 200g?

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

LMAO!!!

SA!

The LR doesn't seem to displace that much water. It was when I added sand that the water level rose in the tank.

Oh well, it's LESS water to spill onto the floor, eh?

sounds like another quote to me!

i guess with the rock being a better grade than what i'm used to, its not as dense so that makes sense.

speaking of water we just came from the pet store buying dog food(something we do about every week) & there's a guy who 3 trips back & forth to his car carrying 5g water jugs(4 each trip). i about hit the floor, 60g of FW for is 300g reef tank, he does this every week or so puts it in a drum & lets it circulate taking whats needed to top of his tank. i'm like dude why dont you by a ro/di system his response with a dont bother me attitude, "man are you crazy, those things cost thousands!" i just laughed and walked off

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

Geez! I wonder who HE has been talking too?

Oh yeah! Speaking of RO/DI units. I found a really good deal, well I already had it but didn't know it...

I bought my ro/di from Air, Water, and Ice and I asked them about refillable DI canisters. They said that mine alread IS the refillable canister and all I need to buy is the 5 lb bag of mixed bed resin. I had also asked them about mixing hot and cold water, through a T, to feed into the unit. They said "You can use the hot water to warm it up to 75 degrees or so. As long as you don't reach above 99 degrees, you'll be fine."

I know my water production is almost triple of what I was getting by feeding in just the cold water.

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

I couldn't resist ! I don't want to think about how much water has ended up on my floor in the past.
Sounds like Dr Mac reconizes a valued customer! Just how big of pieces is the Dr talking about?

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

12" plus. The first shipment, 150 lbs, came in 6 pieces. They are full of caves, craters, and shelves. Really nice rock for a BIG tank. I wouldn't have been happy with these pieces if I was putting them into my 120 though. And because they are so big and heavy, placing them on top of other rocks and giving them the wiggle test pretty much guarantees they won't be able to be knocked over.

JoJo, I have the Extreme Typhoon. It comes with everything you would ever want, including a portable TDS meter. It also came with about 25 feet of tubing. Their customer service is awesome too.

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

Ahhhh, but these fish are SO delicate that I'd be afraid of a QT doing more harm than good. Just like a BSJF, it's acclimation and straight into the tank to alleviate the stress as much as possible.

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

No, there aren't exceptions. I think it's more of a gamble. Some fish most likely won't live through a QT. They need real tank conditions in order to survive. The Achilles Tang and the BSJF are two of those species. QT is always the way to go but with the understanding that they probably won't make it through to see the main tank.

That's the reason I don't have an Achilles yet. They need a big tank. QT's aren't big tanks.

Re: Terry's 450g upgrade

I believe that you lessen the risk in the non QT gamble by getting your fish from Live Aquaria's Divers Den. They QT, deworm/parasite, and treat common disease of the species before they sell.

Terry that is a beautiful fish. They will have another. I have been watching their site a lot the last 3 months or so.
