Re: The 180gal Family Project

Phos gard may be a good idea. I hope it works out.

Craig, there is an "X" where the picture should be.

Re: The 180gal Family Project

Thanks Greg. I think I'd have to get some kind of filter sock and put some phosguard in there because otherwise we'd have to have an in-sump phosban reactor and I don't think they make those.

I think I figured out where it came from though because I really don't think it came from the sand. I dumped an old sample of fish food in there without reading the label and it says "low phosphorus" on it, so I'm sure it came from there.

Re: The 180gal Family Project

I made my reactor out of PVC and just pumped some of the return water to it and had it spill back into the sump. It wouldn't be hard. The manufactured ones could be insump also though. You want to have as much contact as possible so I'm not sure just putting a sock with phosban in the sump would be very effective as it is too passive and water mostly passes around the bag...although it would work a little.

Re: The 180gal Family Project

I was thinking about making some kind of holder to attach to the end of one of the drains draining into the sump...kind of like an end cap on a piece of pvc, but it's a filter sock filled with carbon or phosguard.

That would probably work but you don't want all of the water going through it...I think it would go too fast. You want a longer contact time, so maybe "T" off and have just a little of the water going through your "reactor". Here is the one I built...

It may give you some ideas.

Re: The 180gal Family Project

That looks easy enough. The drain on the right of the tank trickles into the fuge with the majority of the water being diverted into the skimmer section...I'll see what I can come up with. That's the only side we have to put anything under the stand.

Re: The 180gal Family Project

Nikki, I just noticed that arrow in my photograph. I'm not sure what that is about, but the water flows in the opposite direction from the bottom up.

I used the Gatorade bottle idea and made a dual reactor. One side runs the carbon and the other Phosban. I even put a gate valve on each and my total cost was about $20 or less.

Re: The 180gal Family Project

Yeah, I'm thinking of making two and daisy chaining them together. What size pipe did you use for the chamber, Greg?
