hmmmm...a spare room can easily become the sump/equipment room of a 225 gal. inwall.

Re: My 120g Acrylic Tank Chronicle

Why only enjoy the tank while in the dining area? Why not also enjoy it while in the bedroom? Sounds like a PERFECT setup for an in-wall setup. Run your overflows off of each end, enclose the ends with nice cabinets.

I see an absolutely gorgeous setup in your future.

pssstttttt.... go for it, she won't notice...

Re: My 120g Acrylic Tank Chronicle

Nice try Terry....

I took this quote that was made by fish wilson on the "closed loop" thread...

"what ive got is 5 holes in the back of my tank, 1 feeds the pump, 2 are about4 inches from the bottom i plumbed on the inside and ran locline under my rock work and faced them in opposit dir, i also added ball valves to those return lines, the other 2 are closer to the top with locline. now all of this is with 1 pump. the oceans motions controls which holes the flow comes out of. it alternates from 1 top and bottom to the other top and bottom".

Now given my situation with space. How can I make a system like this work utilizing the overflow to run my plumbing... sort of how Robert suggested? Now I need specifics here folks...

Hey Chris, I've been following along and it sounds like you're making progress. AND getting a lesson in patience, too!

Also, about the in-wall tank idea????

.....it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission!!

Yeah, I know Barb...I know. To be honest, We just bought this house recently and after spending 500k, I'm really not in too much of a hurry to start a "Bob Vela" project.

As far as patience is concerned.... It seems that I can never have enough!

Hey, I hear ya! On both counts! Are you enjoying both your tank project and the new house? Cuz that's the goal, right?! I wish I had more knowledge and could offer experiences, but I'm in the same place as you... maybe two steps ahead because I have my tank already. Now, I'm figuring out the plumbing after a major switch in plans... and I'll be DIY'ing my lights starting tonight, assuming the kits arrive today as they're supposed to.

Good luck on your decisions, and try not to over-think things too much. Sometimes the simple solution can be the best one! I've found that I tend to go back to what my first thoughts were, in any case.

Re: My 120g Acrylic Tank Chronicle

I know what you mean. I know there will be much fine tuning to do once I get the tank... Some ideas will be new, and some old ones might get canned. Right now I'm just trying to get the correct info so the builder can actually make the tank! If I don't know the correct hole sizes, placement, and number.... then I can't get the right info to the builder. You know how that goes, and I'll be darned if I'm gonna build the thing twice!

Re: My 120g Acrylic Tank Chronicle

Boozes idea for the return from the sump will get you up and going with the drain-fuge-sump-return part.

If you would still like to do a CL then I would think it would be easy enough to do with holes drilled in the bottom. I'm not sure I would do that though because I'm a proponent for having a sump/fuge as big as you can get. That wouldn't leave any room under the tank for the CL pump and plumbing.

In this case, I would recommend getting a couple Vortec circulating pumps for in the tank. These pumps are expensive but, imho, well worth it. Get the wireless control modules for them too and they will act as a wave maker. They take up VERY little room inside the tank too.

I have one in my tank and I really want to add another but I have to save my pennies first. You can see what it looks like in my chronicle.

Thanks Terry, I will check out your chronicle... But as far as the drain and return holes.... How big do I need to tell the builder to make them?

Re: My 120g Acrylic Tank Chronicle

1" drain will provide 600 gph. 1 1/2" - 1200 gph.

How much flow do you want through your sump? I've read that it's recommended at about 10x tank capacity.

Thats for the drain. Return side can be and will be pressurized so a 1" can carry 4000+ gph but then you have a lot of flow coming out of one pipe. I'd recommend to 1" return lines.

A 1" return coming out of the pump and use a "Y" to split it into two pipes going into the tank.

Re: My 120g Acrylic Tank Chronicle

3-5 times tank volume thru sump is plenty.

So lets take Roberts high end, 5x tank volume. So That makes it 750 gallons. So should I make it a 1 1/4" drain? Will a 5x rate be adequate for SPS?

Re: My 120g Acrylic Tank Chronicle

That 5X is just through the sump for adequate dwell time for skimmer and filter media. You will have to more FLOW in the tank by some other means, either powerheads or closed loop.

Thanks for the clarification Greg. But as far as the diameter of pipe needed for the drain and returns??? This is the info that I need to be able to provide the tank builder. Would a 1 1/4" drain and a 1" return be sufficient?

Now if a 1" return is OK, what size holes would I need to tell the builder to put into the overflow if I plan on having more than 1 locline return exiting the overflow?
