Re: "Chronicle Marina del Filón de los Carlos"

Looks like a worm.
The kind I have spin a long thread and troll it through the water like a fishing line and when they catch something they real it in.
No worries if that is what it is.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: "Chronicle Marina del Filón de los Carlos"

well i tried to test yesterday...same thing. cant read the colors one bit.
1-28-08

PH am- 7.8 <--- the one thing i can read perfectly
PH pm- 7.9
Ammonia- 2?
Nitrites- 1 or 2?
Nitrates- i read 20 other read 5????

Ive come to terms that i am completely colorblind.
going from lowest to highest in ppm on nitrates... my second color looks darker than my 3rd color...
0- lightest yellow
5- yellow
10- lighter yellow
20- Orangish yellow
...

Is this normal, because the person that read 5 said it was a darker yellow
as well...

Is there an avg. avg. length of time inbetween water changes during cycle. i think ill stick to that until everything is done rising and falling.

Re: "Chronicle Marina del Filón de los Carlos"

I have read conflicting things for doing water changes during a cycle. I've read that you shouldn't do any water changes so the cycle is as strong as it can be. This would cause the most bacteria to build in inside the LR.

I've also read that you shouldn't let the ammonia go above 1 so it doesn't kill any hitch hikers that make the rock "live".

Re: "Chronicle Marina del Filón de los Carlos"

I have heard both ways as well. My current "school of thought" is to let the tank cycle "HARD". I not only believe this I practice (Am practicing on TWO tanks right now) it. The only reason I would "soften the cycle" with water changes is if I had been given bad advice and "Stocked" the tank before it was cycled.

My first two tanks went through the normal cycle and I didn't lose anything on the Live Rock (coralline algae etc) but it wasn't PREMIUM Live Rock either. It had no feather dusters or any corals to speak of. Even with that said about a month AFTER the cycle I did start to get some feather dusters on the rock and I hadn't added any NEW rock. So apparently some part of their life cycle (which I didn't even know was IN there) did survive the "Hard Cycle".

I say CYCLE HARD or stay home

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: "Chronicle Marina del Filón de los Carlos"

works for me. makes my life easier. dang water test are driving me insane. i may do a test record results then carry everything to the lfs... including a clean saltwater sample, and have him give me an opinion on my test results and test the clean water in front of me.

That's a very good idea. Also ask for specific test results and not "It's ok or good". Ask WHAT the levels are

Re: "Chronicle Marina del Filón de los Carlos"

When you go to the LFS, open up a few of the test kits off the shelf and see if any have color scales that look like they might be a bit easier for you to read.

My personal thought on WC's and cycling is to do them. The cycle will take longer but the diversity of life you save will be worth the extra effort.
