Rick, you've got this hobby mastered. Damn. The tank looks absolutely perfect. Very nice ricordia, btw. When that sucker splits, I'd love to take his twin home!

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

Thanks Tori ! don't think Imm ready to frag anything quite yet. hoping those rics will split soon. In the meantime, check out my latest acquisition.

Indo-Pacific Coco worm - Ive been wanting one of these for a while and finally found one at my LFS with a tube small enough to fit in my nano.

Really cool filter feeder and I love the orange/red morph. here is a close up and a FTS with the new worm -

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

yea, I was very psyched to find one with that color morph. I had seen em before but usually the LFS only has em in Red and white - which are also quite beautiful. Im going to need to pay extra close attention to my calcium and nitrates with this addition now. This guy requires regular direct feedings of liquid phyto, which im sure will benefit the other critters in my nano, but still, its sure to add to my nitrates a bit.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

Reading this chronicle kept me up pretty late but I got hooked! I have been contemplating the idea of getting my wife this exact tank for mother's day and after what you turned it into, I'm sold!!
Just a couple quick questions on the tank. Before the lighting upgrade were you able to keep all your corals in shape with the factory lighting? If so, what was the wattage on those? I just want to make sure I have ample light. Also, what mods did you have to make? Protein skimmer I believe?
Thanks and I have to say this is one of the better chronicles I've read through! Excellent job, Rick!!

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

Hi Jim, Glad you are enjoying the thread - My hope all along is that not only could I get some help along the way but
that perhaps others could benefit from my learnings and mistakes -

On to your questions -

the stock lighting was actually fine for all corals. The only coral I have lost, resummably lighting related, was my ricordea yuma. It did not die, just bleached badly and there is a lot of speculation that it was no acclimated well to the light. The stock lighting on the BC14 is 2 x24watt 10k bulbs. One white and one actinic. The lighting upgrade was the only TRUE mod I made. Other than that, I removed the stock bioballs and sponge and replaced it with the oceanic skimmer.

Since the lighting upgrade though, I have noticed a dramatic increase in the reproduction of my Zoanthids - new polyps every couple days.

Hope this helps and have fun with your BC !!
