Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

yeah, i think she was particularly vulnerable becuase she just molted yesterday too. whenever she molts (molted rather) she would kinda hide away in the rock work for a day or two, presumably a latent tendnecy until the new shell toughened up. Im in shock.

Is two hermit crabs too small for a 14g nano?

I didn't think they would attack anything unless they aren't getting enough food.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

its possible I guess, they are constantly shuffling the sand in and out of their mouths all day but im really careful not to over feed and change water regularly (even when no nitrates are detectable) I think they just cornered her and they got in a scuffle that went bad.

Any crabs will be opportunistic. Vulnerable carion is on their menu.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

There was a good article in aquarium fish magazine(or something like that) this month that talked about good crabs vs. bad crabs. It said, and i knew this already, that the blue legged and a few others were good, and that the red ones were bad. I use only blues and they do a really good job, stay small, and never pick on anything. Also, love the shrimp, I have one myself and adds a lovely red color to the tank. Are you going to get another one?

Micro blues and Scarlets, no problems noted.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

That's great to know because the blues are WAY cheaper than the scarlets. I need to order about 150 crabs.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

I'm going the way of the snails... I find the crabs perched on my SPS and they pick at the polyps!!! I still have the lefties, Bluelegs and Scarletts in the main tank, but will never add crabs again!!!
