Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

Thanks everyone !! It is really nice to hear such nice words from folks with such great tanks as yourselves. When my wife and I first got the tank we discussed the location at length and she is glad now that we put it in the living room. It has become a topic of coveresation among our house guests and I think I watch the tank more than the TV now. This nano was sort of a test for me to see if I would really get into the saltwater hobby. I've always enjoyed scuba and wanted a little slice of the reef in the house. Now I cannot wait to get a bigger tank.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

All right, after much deliberation - I have come the decision to trade in my original clown (don't worry he's going to a good home in a bigger tank) and bring home some new friends. I really got thinking that the tank would be more amuzing with a pair of clowns in there, but I just thought it would be wrong to host a true pair in such a small tank. Figure I would leave them for some true breeders to enjoy. I also couldn't add a firefish after the tank was so well established with my single clown. (I really do miss him already). All that said, say hello to my new maroon clown and firefish goby they are about the same size in total as my clown was in bodyweight so I'm hopeful the bioload wont change much. They came form the same tank in the LFS so they already get along fine.

I'm calling them fluffy and spike for now :-) Can you guess who is who?

Considering other names...feel free to weigh in. Spike may become twitch in short order.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

yea, still working on the names, Spike (for now) the firefish seems to have a death wish. First night I found he had jumped the wall into the filter floss, no harm done, found him in time. Then in he morning he was pressed against the surface skimmer, I thought he was dead but he appeared to just be stuck the wall relaxing. Odd litttle fish.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

Spike feeling much more at home now...has a little spot he hangs inn at night beneath the rock, during the day he's very active.

My big issue now is my Yuma...its bleaching and Im getting mixed reviews about how to care for it. A lot of experienced folks here think its too little light, some very experienced yuma keepers at NCNRS think it's too much and suggest I shade it for a while. Very troubling and I can't get a definitive answer. Read about that dilemna here.

Ricordea Yuma losing color - turning white ? Why

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

I read that yumas don't like a lot of light but Florida Rics need a lot of light.

That might be where some of the confusion is coming from.

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

So somewhere in the midst of all the yuma debate I decided to order the 3.24 nanotuners lighting upgrade for my biocube. Looking forward to adding some more light to my tank. The yuma will remain shaded for now - Ill post before and after pics of the mods when I get the kit !!

pretty psyched about this

Re: Ricks' Oceanic 14G Biocube - my first salt water tank

DISASTER strikes !!

I always causally laughed at the crabs are evil thread cuz my 2 scarlett (allegedly peaceful) hermits are great substrate cleaners and fun to watch. Although I do suspect one ate one of my original trochus snails too.

As if the battle trying to save my poor yuma wasn't enough, I just found my scarlets gangbanging my fire shrimp !! she had been alive not ten minutes ago! I think she and a crab got tangled then the other joined in. There was a nassarius snail in the mix when I found the orgy of death as well.

When it rains it pours

CRABS ARE EVIL bastards killed my fire shrimp.
