Re: My slow 135g build

Wit, is there something that i'm making more complicating than it needs to be? Honestly, i'm a pretty simple minded person so please be patient with me.

Kathy, that would make sense. Should i have mud & chaeto in both sections or just in seperate fuge?

Thanks, Emg. isn't that a nice sump set up, i drool everytime i see.

Ragvette, so once a tank is established enough it will be able to fight off what a uv would kill?

Thanks everyone. i guess i need to re-evaluate my plans and what i've read because I dont want to make thiings more complicated than they will are

Re: My slow 135g build

Which pumps are you thinking of getting? How high will the pumps need to pump the water?

Re: My slow 135g build

The pump will push just under 3ft from bottom of sump to bottom of DT.

This is the pump i'm considering Aquarium Water Pumps & Water Movement: Quiet One Pumps

The 4000 model as a return, and also the same model for a closed loop.

Re: My slow 135g build

I have never owned a quiet one, but I have heard they are not so quiet. You can't go wrong with sequence pumps. With only a 3 foot head, I would maybe go with a sequence dart for the return, and the same for the CL. Sequence pumps also like a little back pressure on them, so if you had too much flow (is there such a thing? ) you could always throttle them back a little. What kind of skimmer and lights are you going to run? Looks like its going to be a sweet setup. When I was setting up my 125g with a basement sump, I got frustrated a few times, and was wondering if it was all worth it...... It was.. Take your time, and when frustration arises, walk away from it for a bit.. I hurried some stuff, and regret it now, but still love the tank. I would use the CL drains in leu of plugging them up. Make sure you use shut off valves everywhere though. They come in handy in an emergency.. Oh yeah, the Lowes union ball valves are JUNK. I had to take my CL plumbing back apart due to a leak, and the valve leaked.. A LOT! I ended up having to drain my tank down past the CL intakes to be able to do the repair I needed to do. The red handle NON union ball valves are the way to go in my book. I used them for everything in the basement. They seal well when closed. I have had no issues with them. If you fear the bottom of the tank CL intakes, you can plug them, and drill some higher up on the back of the tank. Mine are about 12" up on the back wall. Good luck! Can't wait to see water in it.

Re: My slow 135g build

Well, i got some really bad news. Yesterday when it was time for me to go home from work my boss pulled me aside to let me know that she would have to lay me off due to a lack of funds. It bothers me because a left a really easy, laid back job of 5yrs in October, only reason was i had to work 6 days at the old job and would only work 5 at the new one. It was clearly made to me that there was no way that I would be laid off/ hours cut if anything was to occur, well that was one of many promises that weren't kept.

What really sucks is yesterday was my wife's last day at her job because next week starts her internship to becoming a teacher!

So, the tank has been put on the back burner for now, atleast until I find a new job. I guess I will be working on parts of it that cost little to no money. Sorry for the depressing story, just needed to vent a little.

Re: My slow 135g build

That sux JoJo! I just caught up to this thread and now it's going to be on hold. Well, get going and find a new job! No time for slackin off now and moping around about something thats over.
Its gonna be a good new year for you i just know it.
When you are ready i would like to go over the closed loop with you. It would be silly to close it up. If you find the time go into my tank thread and check mine out. It is the best thing invented since ice cream.
Keep your head high!

Re: My slow 135g build

Thanks everyone for the support. Don't worry I have a list of places I will be applying to tomorrow & a few favors that i will be redeeming that should get me into somewhere nice.

As for the tank, i don't think its going to be postponed after all, i still need alot of help on the plumbing, ventilation, and such. so by the time I figure out what i need, i will be back in business and ready buy my products.

I went and got a bathroom exhaust fan that will go into the tank area, so to keep humidity down & maybe temp when lights are on also. Once I take the LR turned Base rock out of the 40g Rubbermaid tube that its in, im think of using the tub as a salt mix tub. I would make a wood frame so that the tub doesnt bow to much, put wheels on the frame so it can be rolled from across the room where it would be stored & up next to the sump when its time for a water change. I have enough room on the side of the stand for a Brute garbage can to use as an ATO.

I will have to run a line from a water spicket outside using PVC, it will be attached to the exterior of the house until it reaches the opposite side of the wall of the ATO, there I will reduce the line, drill through the wall connect to the R/O.

Re: My slow 135g build

i'm really considering replacing the little giant closed loop system with 2 Hydor Koralia 3's. They are about the same in price as the LG would be & they only use 10wph each vs. 100whp with the LG. Thanks Doni. I will have to pay special attention on how i will hide these & still be able to access them when needed.

Re: My slow 135g build

That is the reason I would prefer to go with a closed loop. There wouldn't be anything visible in the tank. But that is a really great observation about the electric usage. With the price of electric now a days....

If you connect pipes to the bulkheads and close them off with a ball valve, you can certainly change your mind later then.
