Re: My slow 135g build

Sorry, I was putting these on the other day and lost my internet service then forgot about it. Here are pics of my system . The line with the red valve is the 1" line to the sump. The line with the black valve is the 3/4" line to the fuge. The left line with the disconnect is the return.

This is the line to the fuge. It enters at the far end of the fuge and...

exits the other end via an overflow box which empties into the sump.
The greenish pump keeps the overflow box primed.

very true, but i hope your wife doesnt read this comment, i know you're Mr. NASA & all but a woman's nagging will have you calling for back up

you're right on with those measurements, i will just have to settle for the 3/4" in the return section because i dont think i have enough room to widen the holes.

Nice set up Greg, how much taller does your fuge sit over your sump?

Thanks Jo Jo. The fuge is about 6" taller than the sump.

Re: My slow 135g build

JoJo,

I was reading about dry rock and I came across this at WetWebMedia. They're a great site with lots of good information but just like everywhere, I don't think there is a Holy Grail for this hobby.

Reusing Dried Rock...Not Always Good - 09/29/06
Hello,
<<Howdy>>
I was doing some research on live rock and could not come across
anything on this.
<<Okay>>
I currently bought a saltwater aquarium from a friend who decided to quit the hobby. I bought the aquarium about 3 or 4 months after
he had drained his aquarium, and he left his 30 lbs. of live rock outside in the sun for that amount of time.
<<"Live" no more...>>
So I took it deciding I might could use it later to maybe seed it with fresh live rock.
<<Will never be "the same" again>>
Ok so here goes, is the live rock officially dead?
<<...as the proverbial doornail>>
I assumed it was so I placed it in a garden pond with goldfish outside of my house to let it just sit, but red algae is now
starting to grow on the rock.
<<Yikes! Depending on the size of the pond, this rock can raise the pH well beyond what is comfortable/healthy for the goldfish. At the very least, the (likely) low pH of the pond will have sapped much of the buffering capacity from this rock>>
I was just wondering why this is happening, because I'm not expecting anything to happen, and this is freshwater.
<<This has nothing to do with whether the water is "salted" or not. You've seen algae grow on rock in fresh water haven't you? Same thing happening here...though this rock likely had dead/dried organic matter deep inside that once the rock re-hydrated, is now contributing to a Cyanobacteria bloom on the surface of the rock. Nothing strange going on here>>
I was just going to use it in the new tank after a while to see if it could be seeded from other live rock.
<<Could be used as "base" rock (after a few soakings/rinsings), but will never regain the biota it once had and may have little if any buffering capacity left. Personally, I wouldn’t use this rock to build a captive reef...maybe break up/use for frag bases>>
Any information would be great, just wondering why its growing red algae. What’s going on?
<<As explained>>
Thanks, Cody
<<Regards, EricR>>

Re: My slow 135g build

thanks for the info Terry. I got a couple of questions:

<<Could be used as "base" rock (after a few soakings/rinsings), but will never regain the biota it once had and may have little if any buffering capacity left. Personally, I wouldn’t use this rock to build a captive reef

what should the rock be soaked in? Also this guy allowed the rock to become infest with algea, my rock was in good condition before i tore the tank down, should i still be worried that i may have the same problem as this guy?

Re: My slow 135g build

the LR is already in a tub so i will fill it with R/O then add the skimmer, heater, & Ph to get it cook. maybe adding some LR as well for seeding.

Re: My slow 135g build

I don't know. That guy also had it in fresh water that has a completely different makeup as far as PH and what not. So maybe they were referring to the freshwater bacteria? And the need to kill it so it doesn't cause a cycle? I know freshwater and saltwater have different anerobic bacterias but I've never researched fresh water tanks like I have saltwater.

Re: My slow 135g build

thats what i was thinking, the rock was exposed to outside elements, which caused that issue. i'm not sure about the part of dead/dried organic matter deep inside that once the rock re-hydrated, is now contributing to a Cyanobacteria bloom on the surface of the rock

Re: My slow 135g build

i was planning on putting a second corner overflow in the tank. but i'm wondering if it would be a problem since my return pump is a Mag 9, it already has a 3ft head to the overflow above it, i dont believe its strong enough to push to the other one.

i'm also of thinking of just widening the overflow box to accomodate the larger bulkheads. as of now the overflow box is 6x8", i would like to widen it to 6x12 maybe 6x14.

Re: My slow 135g build

couple of shots of the old dry rock getting wet. I have 2 Maxi Jets PH, a Penguin PH, a Stealth heater & the Coralife skimmer tending to the rock.

I will be quarantining everything new to the system, as you can see K-do is being quarantined as well.

Either way would be a good upgrade idea. Even with the Mag 9, a 2nd overflow would provide you with really good surface skimming. The Mag 9 doesn't need to pump water up through both of them. It just controls the amount of water entering the tank. The overflows will determine how fast the pump can add water to the tank and they also determine what water gets sent back down to the sump. With both of your ideas, more of the surface water will get sent down to the sump.

Re: My slow 135g build

so you're thinking maybe do the second overflow without a return? that would work, i just hate that i couldn't get the full benefit of it.

Re: My slow 135g build

You can certainly drill it for the return, run the pipe and everything, and then just put a ball valve under the tank and close off that pipe. Then you're all set if you decide you want a bigger pump and you want to use it.
