Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

If you dose alk, won't that bring the calc down?

Chemistry isn't my strong point.

Definitiv not Terry. In no case dose more alk. to reduce the Calc values Lorraine. Simply some days wait and as far as possible switch off the calcium reactor, if you should use one. The white layers are lime precipitation, they accrues by ions displacements. Should you dose daily magnesium, you should do this further. Stop to dose calcium for some days and measures evy other day alk. and PH.

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Hello Heinz,

I still haven't used this on my tank yet. I have a kalk reactor ran through my ATO, no calcium reactor. Did you see my other thread on the salt mix?

Hello Lorraine,

no I dont see your other thread sorry. Ok with the Ca-reaktor but now we know why you have lime precipitation in the tank. If you dose e.g., Magnesium and Calzium at the same time and/or a kalk reactor at the same time his kalkwasser in the aquarium delivers it can come to this reaction. It is not dangerous or especially bad, no fear. It looks only badly because a quite thin lime layer on everything in the aquarium puts away.

BTW .... which other Thread do you mean Lorraine?

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Seachem Reef Salt Stats - A bit of help please?

I have lime precipitation in the holding tank (not the display tank). I added mag to my saltwater mix that was very high in calcium.

I don't dose the mag at the same time as the calc or as the kalk reactor in the display.

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Well, too many questions and not enough pics today. Took these tonight. My sun polyps seem to really like where I've got them. There is quite a bit of flow over them, the old one that was covered with sponges has recovered and is thriving in the sun. My newer one has been moved to the shade, and is opening up like crazy too.

They look pretty cool when they open up all the way like this. They do this during the daytime as well (not all day, but much of it).

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Well it looks like IO mixed with the Reef Salts gives me an acceptable range of calcium. I ended up bump the alk up a bit with baked baking soda to be in balance with the calc and adjusted the mag. But all of the tanks have responded well and I haven't seen any more precipitation in the holding tank.

None of the tanks have enough carbonate alkalinity. Not sure what I have been using to get the borate so high (even higher than the Reef Salt has). I'll be retesting all the tanks today and see what levels I get now. I have already noticed a good change in the pH levels on the 125. I am getting less fluctuation in pH between night and day.

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Thanks Lynn. I think the chemistry experiment turned out fine.

Just before I got the new temp probe, the heater stuck on while I was at work and the tank raised to 78.5. Well all my fish and corals said they liked the warm spell, so instead of cooling it down, I decided to stick with 78 degrees instead of 77. I got the new temp probe installed and it sure is nice to run the fans and heater again with the controller. I did decide to get a new heater cause I know the one I have gets stuck on (or off). I guess it's about time to change out the UV bulb too, so that will also be in my upcoming order.

I got something really purdy today, but I have to wait for it to grow up. It is a very tiny frag of a Rainbow Acan. I'd take a pic, but honestly, it just ain't much to look at. My other acans I got last August have really taken off since I changed the flow, so I think this one will look awesome about 6 months from now too.

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Today we switched out the lights on the 125.

I changed the VHO's from 5'rs (white/blue) to 6'rs (both blue).

The 250w HQI's changed from Aqualine (2/13k and 1/20k) to Phoenix (all 14k).

I think I am going to like it!

Had to take this cute shot of the grandkids in the 29g too! They hang out with each other in this corner all the time!

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Some changes in the 50 too. I bought one of these filters a few months ago for the 29g (the one rated for 75 gallons) and really like it. I don't get any stuff on the water surface any more in that tank, so I am switching the 50 over to two of these and removing the RemoraPro, Aquaclear HOB, and internal pump. I'm hoping to get the same results! (Note, the filter for the 75 gallon has two chambers on it.)

I also have new lights for the 50. I'll be changing the Current 150w from 14k to 20k. The 14k bulbs still have 5-6 months left on them, but I'm going to switch anyway. Hopefully, I don't break the old bulbs getting them out. I broke every one of the bulbs that came off the 125 (don't know if they were poorly made, if I did it wrong or what).

BOB is still having fun in his tank. He got a bath and is now picking up a few rays to keep his golden glow!
