Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Looking forward to seeing my new birthday corals! I guess you are busy with that Aquacontroller. Soon enough your tank will be so automated that it will take on a life of its own. It'll be war of the reefs all over, Lorraine's robotic tank!

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Sorry, no one was visiting me here so I posted them in a separate thread. The pics in the other thread were taken in the 50. I now have them in the 125. I totally remodeled the left side of the tank for them. I don't think my red monti is going to like what I did, but I think I like it. Mr. Palani really likes it as it opens up the back cave a lot more. He now likes to hang out under the new shelf on the end where he can see me coming down the hall (to feed him). Took a few shots tonight, but I think they will look nicer tomorrow so may take some more then too.

Pics of the newbies!

It's obvious that you really love your tank and it shows. It's beautiful!

Great pickup on the new corals. Very sweet!

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Thanks T! Yeah, I'm kinda attached to it. Sometimes though I get way too absorbed by it.

Something strange is going on in the 125. It could be caused by several changes I have made lately. I haven't had any nitrates for months now and to my surprize the test strip tests I do a few times a week now shows that I have some. Confirmed with Salifert it is sitting at about 2 ppm. Grrr! Let's see what's different in my tank:

I took chaeto out of the refugium just before Christmas. It was overgrown, kept clogging the pump, and simply a major PITA I was tired of dealing with it.
I added my Yellow Tang. Kinda figured that he is about the same bioload as the two BSJF I lost.
I started feeding Phytofeast, but I only does 1/2 a dose.

I increased flow in the tank by replacing one of the MJ1200 pumps with the Tunze Nanostream 6025 and I'm running it continuously.
I did a 10% WC Friday and cleaned the sand.
I added chaeto back into the refugium (a small amount I stole from the 50)
I'll do a 25% one today that will just be water exchange.
I will stop the Phytofeast and cut other feeding in half.

This seems too strange, so much for just 2 ppm, but I have become accustomed to 0 and want to keep it that way.

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Sorry to ask, but do you have any clams? They are great for keeping the nitrates down. Mine reads 0 always, even when over feeding at times. Just a thought, and maybe you have them.

I love the story of your tank rescue.
Seems like every time I turn around you have new stuff.
Everything looks great as always.

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

V - Yip, I have a single clam. He has been picked on lately, but now the picking seems to have stopped (I'm hoping). I think it is mostly related to doing all these new things at the same time. I wouldn't have even worried about it in the past, but now I know that 0 can be sustained quite easily and will continue to do that. The funniest thing is that I was having a yeck of a time keeping my 50g anemone tank below 5 ppm and it has stayed a steady 0 for the past month (since I traded out my skimmer for my friends' identical one, started using the skimmer box again, and added chaeto to it).

L - I've tried to be good and stop buying stuff, but...well...you know.

The new cave looks inviting!
May I come spend some time under the ledge?

I'd leave the kittys home though, my dogs and fish aren't kitty trained.

Re: Lorraine's 125 (et. al) - The 2nd Year

Last night was fun, no really...ok, well maybe not fun but rewarding...actually it was just a royal pain but now it is done.

I just haven't been satisfied with the flow around my acros so I messed with it last night. I started out thinking I just needed to move the tunze nanostream pump to the left side of the tank. The area is so small it is really hard to get any flow without blasting stuff. I did accommplish that (I think) and I hope all my corals forgive me. I moved the MJ 1200 to the middle of the tank and aimed it to the left. The koralia is in the far left corner angled to the right over the top of the acros. The return box is between the two pumps. I'm still not sure I like how I have the middle return nozzle aimed. So, in the process I had to rearrange my zoo patch to fit the MJ1200 in this area. And then, move the clam, and the fox coral, and the hammers, and the frogspawn, then the acans, no move them back. wow they are growing up nicely... Several hours later, I ran out of room for everything. I now have my red mushroom rock in my refugium...how did that happen...and another rock with a few lavendar fuzzies, green fuzzies, and orange zos on it too. My red mushrooms have been bleaching for some reason, lavendar fuzzies are trying to melt, so hopefully the rduced lighting will be good for them. They both are very nice rocks. Oh yeah, my really nice orange sun polyps are under the ledge on the left side now and only viewable from the side of the tank. Oh well, I just felt they needed some shade and that was the best place for them right now.

I have a feeling that this won't be the end of the changes, but that was a lot of work.

If you can figure all that out you get a gold star!

I also walked the doggies.

I think you love your tank too! It shows!

Ok, the list continued this morning. Feed the fishies...WC in the 29g...small WC in the 125...clean and calibrate both pH probes on the 125...remove the salt creep that is all over the bottom of the stand (from the stinking bulkhead on my fuge that leaks)...make some water...sell a few frags...and now my doggies want their walk! Oh, the bulkhead still leaks.

At the end of the day, I guess I would rather do this stuff than clean house (since the house still needs a good cleaning).
