The Xel Ocean! 210G Journey

I started out with a 29G. Biocube and instantly fell in love with reefing!

My bio cube is doing FANTASTIC and I decided in my head that someday I would get a much larger tank for my house!(Biocube is at work, I figured I could keep a close eye on the thing since it was my first Tank)

I plan on updating all what has happend with my biocube shortly with picutres on monday in its little thread... but thats not why you click on this link ... oh no sir!

now for the info.

After much deliberation and questions in the previous thread 210 Gal setup Good Deal?

I have just recieved an email from the seller containing the following

Me: Ok so i'm 99.9% everything is in order

Me: just a few questions to clairify

Me: there are no leaks, cracks, chips or anything wrong with the aquarium correct?
Seller: no

ME:also have you ever used any copper with this tank?
Seller: no

Me: and what did you have in the tank before?
Seller: just salt fish

Me:If we are all good there When would be a good time for me to come up and see the tank?

Seller: sat or Sunday call me before to make plans

After reading this email I was 150% sure i was buying the setup from him. (unless I saw otherwise once I inspected the tank)

So I have givin him a ring and told him I will be by his house tomorrow to buy and pickup the tank

Here Is what I am getting
210 All glass megaflow 72x24x29 Used
stand and canopy Used
Current orbit light fixture 72" 3 metal highlide and 4 compact fl Used
New skimmer Aqua C EV 180
New Ebo Jager 250W Heater
New All glas megaflow 2 210 gallon sump wet6 dry
New life quard heater module

I dont think I will get any sleep tonight!

I know there isnt a verry good shot of the sump but im sure some of you have seen that sump in a LFS before... what do you guys think about it? Also I was thinking of just dumping the Bio balls and preplaceing it with LR rubble. Whatchya think?

Re: The Xel Ocean! 210G Journey

I would buy a sump/fuge combo for in the stand. I really think that having a safe haven for pod repopulation and letting them getting blown into the tank on a continous basis is very healthy for pretty much anything you'll keep in the reef.

As far as keeping the current sump and using LR rubble, I've read in other threads that that too can become a nitrate factory. But then again, others swear by that method. So I'm confused...

Thanks it definatly was a KILLER find

tbittner: that makes total sence about the nitrate factory if what reefman says is true about it just collecting deitris

Im a bit comfused as to what pard of the under tank is for what ...

fuge is for cheato? which cuts down on alge?
sump is for LR rubble? for filtration?
and rufugum is for?? ???????

I could be way off...

also what do you mean by pod repopulation?

I know I want to run carbon i just love the effect it has on my Biocube.

I have just been reading up on everyones page so i know where they go and what not just not to keen on what is called what and what its exact purpose is for.

im also comming from a Bio cube wich can really add on any of that stuff without doing external mods.

Fuge and reFUGium are the same thing, This is the area with lower flow for macro algae growth( yes it helps reduce nitrates in the tank) I use chaeto algae. The pods you mention can breed in this area because of the low flow, they do make their way into the tank which feed the livestock in the tank. This is the main food for mandarins (dont add a mandarin for at least 6-12 months of a new tank) wrasse and anthias. I call this area a built in refrigerator... Always tons of food in there for the tank.

Sump is where you can put live rock or rubble, extra equipment that you dont want hanging on the main tank. some put heaters in there and even skimmers.

Re: The Xel Ocean! 210G Journey

so basically sump = maint. area
refuge = food factory

so would you have the flow go overflow-> sump -> refuge -> pump -> return?
