Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

I believe some people use them for kalc but I could be wrong. I seem to remember something about it from a reef club meeting.
You may want to leave a little more space in the skimmer area to allow you to easily remove and clean it. If you can get it out easily then leave it alone, but we didn't leave ourself enough working room so I wanted to warn you of the possibility

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

ok, well here is an update... i have started the sump, but it has been SOOOOO cold out that we couldnt finish cutting the rest of the baffles.. GRRR... and now that my toolbox is just as big as Wit's i feel better! LMAO! the Dremmel we got was defective... had to return and so i got the dremmel 400.. toolbox and all.. and it was on sale for cheaper than the first one we bought! 60 bucks baby! o yeah! lol... so now im just waiting on a day that isnt at a -25 wind chill and i will be finished! here is a pic of the sump half done...

2 more baffles to go....

i used this silicone that was right by the acrylic sheets.... now reading about all this silicone problems, im worried... its 100% silicon and i see nothing in the fine print about it being mold resistant or whatever....

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

It's looking GOOD!!!

How hard would it be to replace the silicone? I'm NOT saying TO replace it but just wondering how hard it would be to do....

imj not sure...probably not too hard... just slice down the gap with a knife to get the baffles out, i left some space between the glass and acrylic for the expanding pblm between the 2... then scrape the silicone off with a blade?! i guess! how would i know.. like is ther a way to test the water before actually hooking it up to see if it leaches anything? i mean what would i be looking for in the water? hmmm... almost maybe better to be safe than sorry....?

In this hobby I'm thinking it's better to be very, very, very safe or you'll be very, very, very sorry.

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

ummmm, a dog crate pan?

Lowes sells all sorts of containers you could use for this. Even use a roll of plastic and staple the edges of it on the edge of the stand.

lol.. an example only... yeah i guess that would work.. i was thinking of something a little more streamlined and more pleasing to the eye... plastic stapled up into the corners is kinda of an eye sore... but i get your idea! LMAO

throw some ideas at me...anyone!!!

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

ok, sump is almost done... had to wait a bit on the center baffle, didn't want it to come loose while trying to put the third on... but today, the third baffle is in! but i still need to silicone it better! :P... the tube i was using got a hole in it and every time i squeezed it it got silicone alllll over my hand.. GRRRR!!! so i get a new tube to finish and i will be all done!! i will wait about a week, water test it, then hook it up and then i will be ready to test the whole aquarium!

i will be getting 3 different tpes of base rock ffrom Marco Rocks, unless anyone has a better place? and then a few pieces of Live ock to start the cycle...

I am looking into a RO/DI unit before i do all this adding salt water stuff... the LFS i got to has a truck they bring and pump the saltwater into the tank from he truck, but they said it would cost about 175 to do this. and it will cost me a little more to get the unit and salt, but i think will far out weigh it price in usage... so thats what im up to....take care everyone!

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

You can buy the RO/DI and enough salt to make 160 gallons for less then $175. Then you have an RO/DI system all setup and ready to use. It will just take a couple days to make that much water. Nothing wrong with a little patience though.
