Not if your trying to replicate a normal day/night cycle in the tank.

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

I put my moon lights in my bio29 on a timer so they would shut off while the main lights where on.

With a controller you should be able to program the lunar monthly sequence from full to no moon light. This will greatly enhance the normal sleep pattern of tank inhabitants. Combined with a dusk to dawn day lighting sequence, voila, nature, eh?

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

ok.... i could... but if i put a splitter outlet on there for the 2 moonlight plugs i have.. i am out of plug space :P on my DC8... and i will DEFINITLY need a chiller...so how do i get around this? are the added 4 plugs for AC's expensive? havnt looked... not that that is too big a problem.. but didnt factor in a chiller... my tank temp is WAY too high right now... so i am going to lower the amount of time the halides are on, if i even put them on right now. because the tank temp is way to high before they are even supposed to go on. :P anyways... rambling again... thanks for the feedback!

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

I have heard mixed information about the value of a true lunar light cycle. It seems it might be helpful to induce spawnings and it seems logical that it would be beneficial, but otherwise, I haven't seen any hard evidence of a benefit. I keep my moonlights on all night every night for aesthetic value and so the fish have some light to navigate by. I've noticed my mandarin eating quite a bit at night, so I think the light may be especially beneficial to her. But, perhaps the lunar cycle would cause the pods to spawn more...

I don't see what harm there would be in leaving them on 24 hrs if you aren't going to use a true lunar cycle. They will be completely drowned out by other lighting during the day and will probably just add a little "shimmer". The disadvantage would be shortened life on the LED's because they are on twice as long.

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

ok, update...

well, the tank gets WAY to hot to even have the HAlides on for a bit....the temp spikes way up! so i shut those off, and wont put them on till i get a cooler...i will have the T5's at a shortened time... from 3pm to 10 pm for now.... that seems to be stabalizing the temp at about 79-80... still too high... but i just cant do anything else.....the halides spike it up about 4 degrees or so....and quick.. so anyways.. thats my plan for the week i am away! i leave in the early morn!!! Cozumel baby!!! cannot wait! i still have so much to do around here..

i did get a clean up crew... my diatoms were really working over my tank... i got like 5 huge turbo mexican snails... and like 10 astrea snails...as well as a tiger tail cucumber they had there and a cleaner and skunk shrimp... so they have REALLY cleaned the tank up... unbelievable how fast they did it! so there it is...al shall be well..... when i return! im off now! see you all when i get back!

Adios!

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

not sure of your hood fan placement.....circulation,,,one/some blowing in, and at least one blowing out. also a small fan in the sump area.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

no hood.....but the fan in the light fixture..it goes on when the t5's are on... when i get back, i will try putting a fan over the sump... i have glass panels over the tank and my light right over it.... so maybe 2 fans below would help?
