oh ok! i see...thanks for the help... lol.. i ordered the rock thinking.. this is it.. i have my tank... and everything i need to get the rock in and start cycling.. lol.. wrong!!! ok, well at least most of the die off will be done.. i have certainlt seen enough of it in there... thinki should siphon it out? its all settle on the bottom...its just a bare bottom.. nothing in there but rock and water. thanks again

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

Whether it's the right thing to do or not, I don't know, but I personally would leave it in there to help make the cycle stronger. When you pull the rock out of this tank to move it into your new tank, the rock is bound to be exposed to air. Oxygen kills the bacteria, therefore a mini cycle once everything is in the new tank. It should only last for a day or two or three though. Assuming that the rock completely cycles in the existing tank that is...

When you move the rock, shake it real good in a bucket of saltwater, even scrub it down with a brush to get rid of as much cwap as you can before putting it into your new tank.

Make sure you keep the salinity around 1.025 by replacing the evaporated water, every other day or so. You could even consider getting the calcium up to help fuel the coraline growth.

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

Wow! I was way behind on this thread. Looks like everything is going great. Is the tank you are getting the Tech tank? If so, I have that exact tank. I love mine.
One thing I do want to throw in though is that you can skip the live sand. There is really very little life left in it by the time it gets packaged and sits on the shelf etc. If you have somebody nearby with a reef ask them for a cup or two of their sand. Then you can use that to seed yours. Or just wait a bit and the LR will seed it for you.
Love the rocks.
Can't wait to see the scape you have planned.
With all of that nice shelf you may want to look at Woodstock's scape. She has a really cool shelf that the fish can swim in and out of. It's pretty cool.

hey! thanks for stopping by! you mean skip the sand completly? live sand i mean.. not get any at all?! i thought with 2 bags, there would be enough life to start sand population.. i know there isnt much life in there.. but maybe some.. maybe enough?!... but you think its not worth it at all? thanks a lot!

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

Believe it or not, but the live sand bags have an expiration date on them. Check the dates and make sure you buy bags of live sand with the newest date on them. The theroy is that the life all dies while in the bag. I have zero proof one way or the other. I'm doing like your thinking, I bought 600 pounds of dry aragonite sand and I'll add a bag of "live sand" just in case....

I don't want to bring any of the sand from my 120 reef because it's crushed coral and it's just NASTY!!!

Re: Althea's 90 Gallon.....

Your LFS should give you a cup of live sand from their aquarium. I'd go that route IIWY.
