10g Catchup +

Over a year ago I had a 10g FW tank, as I had for awhile. But I decided to upgrade. So I got my 29. I decided to re-setup my 10g. I got a pair of shellies ( cichlids) for my old 10g, with newer & nicer scaping. They did ok till They got sick with a rare disease. I could medicate but sense it wasn't for this ( nothing was ) I didn't. See, it would ether help or make the disease stronger, killing the fish. Left on there own, they might get over it. They didn't . So I used the 10g as a hospital / quarantine. But soon the 29g was stocked and everyone was healthy. So I converted it to salt.
I got 10lb of crushed coral substrate, a new light bulb, some salt, a hydrometer, and new filter media. I new I had alot to learn so I hit the books. WOW! This was complex! I started w/c`s and adding conditioning chemicals. Soon after I leaned how wrong I was doing this.

Re: 10g Catchup +

Ok, pics. You will see this: in order from top to bottom.
-Shellies ( look close on the bottom right )(3)
-The SW, before tear down(4)
-Damsel(5)
-The 10g BEFORE upgrade ( see why I did that? )(1)
-The 29g just after upgrade ( it doesn't look good yet )(2)
Don't say it, were all thinking it, they are not even close to order. See (#`s).

Re: 10g Catchup +

I tore down the tank, washed it out, replaced some other stuff, refilled it with RO and re-stared the cycle with 5lb ( two peaces ) of LR. One hand full of chato, a margarita snail, a yellow tail blue damsel and 2 lb more LR I was gaining confidence.

Re: 10g Catchup +

Your FW tank has come a long way.

If you are going to get involved in FW planted aquariums, I highly recommend the book Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants by Peter Hiscock.

You'll find that this area can be almost as complex as a reef system.

I point this out because it looks like you have several species of plants that are often sold as "aquarium plants" but are actually house plants, and they do not do well long term. You also seem to have several species that are very demanding in their light requirements. The typical aquarium reflector, even with a decent bulb, is just not going to produce enough light.

Everything above is from a year ago. I'm just bring RS up to date here. Plants are all redone along with lights. We'll get to all that when we come to it.

Re: 10g Catchup +

I'll get to that. See, everything you have read happened about a year ago. That is why this thread is called Catchup.

Keep in mind I did let it cycle.

3 weeks after the clown I got a skimmer. It was the Fission nano protein skimmer. What a piece of ****!

Re: 10g Catchup +

And thats how it was for months. AC20, fission nano, AGA 15w light, 10lb LR, Damsel, Clown, snail, and Cheato. Some time in there I got a Peppermint shrimp. Some time in there I killed a Peppermint shrimp.

Then we moved.

That brought about some changes. I got a new stand. I made a new skimmer. I cemented the LR so as to not crush anyone else ( RIP, Mr.Shrimp ) and I got a Current USA Satellite 40w PC with lunar. Thats when the reef started.
