Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

Just buy the cheapest magnetic glass cleaner you can find and glue it to the egg crate.

Dual purpose frag rack, holds the frag and cleans the glass every time you move it.

Hey Matt! Check this link out....
Mag-Racks | The Magnetic Coral Frag Rack

If I had some way of "embedding" the magnets I would make these myself!

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

I have seen them before. You can embed the magnets in epoxy and they should be fine. I have no experience working with epoxy or I would attempt it myself.

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

I have TONS of epoxy experience but was worried about it in the tank long term. I'm talking about your regular epoxy (liquid 2-part) not the marine putty we use for rocks. I wonder what the toxicity of it would be.

I have some pretty AWESOME Nimble Nano Magnets that are embedded in acrylic that would also work for this. I contacted the guy who makes Nimble Nano's and asked him about making me some of these. If I had experience with acrylic I would try it this weekend

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

AL,

I am sure you probably already know this but just in case you don't, pull the MSDS for any epoxy you might you use and you find out if it will leach or not, some of the epoxies will not exude any chemicals once they fully cure. I am guessing you can access any MSDS through your job but if not PM me and I can get from mine.

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

Thanks Jason. I happen to have the packaging for the "5 Minute Epoxy" I had in mind. I think I'll look that up right now. GREAT idea! Funny how a "computer nerd" has to be reminded such things as this.

and you're EXACTLY right about having MSDS access and worse case EXPERIENCE in this area Maybe I need more sleep

Thanks bro!!

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

Very interesting, but what about just layering the shelves using PVC pipes. You could use some kind of hook to hang some from the top. I have seen both.

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

That's a good idea Vicki. I was looking for a "quick fix" until I can get the pump for my 90g in and get it up and running. Once it's "ready for critters" I'll be moving all the Live Rock and corals into that and then building a modular rack system from Egg-crate and PVC (like you suggested). I may look it over this weekend and see what I can "fashion" to get me through maybe 6-8 weeks (estimated time frame from now to when I can start adding corals to the new tank).

Thanks for you input.

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

Remember when you construct it, some of the layers can extend over the tow of others. The mushrooms needing less light can go on the lower levels. I need to work on something along those lines for my tank.

On another topic, I decided to start changing my water in my 24 twice a week after seeing how well your tank is doing. The skimmer I have is worthless and I am tired of looking at my corals suffer. I discussed this with Jack last night. I think I have him understanding my concerns now.

Hey don't throw Me under the bus with Jack! I need to STAY on his good side... that's My "hook-up" for equipment~ If he's always changing water in your tank because of me and MY ideas he's not going to be very happy with me.

I may start laying out the Egg-Crate for my multi-tiered Frag Rack this weekend. Sounds like a FUN project!!

I didn't say he would change the water, I just wanted him to understand I need to change the water. Don't worry, I didn't throw you under the bus

I don't think it's a GO for this one. Check out

What about this stuff? Think it'll work for encasing magnets?

Underwater Glue

Sounds like a PLAN to me. Did you happen to read the "Customer Testimonials" on it. Just in case here is what was posted:

Quote:
Used this product and love it! I tried many others but this glue by far worked the best for building my magnetic frag racks. Sealed magnets perfectly. Also found it very safe to be in my reef tank. Didn't notice any negative effects on the hundreds of corals and fish I have.
How perfect!!
