Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

Hey Sunnie. You posted while I was posting but I wanted to reply to you as well

I don't know that I would epoxy the crate TO the tank. That makes it hard to change around later. I'm going to use PVC as the legs and create a staggered shelf system.

For filtration.. I hate to say it out loud.... I'm breaking the rules.. My OWN rules actually... The tank is filterless except for the HOB fuge. There's a MJ400 pumping water from the tank into the fuge and then it gravity feeds back into the tank. One week out of four I drop a Whisper Filter bag (cheap ones from Wally-World) in there just to polish and take out anything that may be lurking. Other than that I do LOTS of 3 gallon water changes (3 gallons is the bucket size I use) and test like crazy.

I like the Xenia and have several local reefers waiting in line to get some. I'm planning to do a Xenia wall all along the back glass of this tank ... maybe

Thanks for your kind words. It's not on steroids.. in fact it's not even on supplements...I watch my calc and maintain it around 420-440 but other than that I don't even OWN any supplements.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

True. It would be hard to change later. I hadn't even thought of using the crate until today. In fact I've been so wrapped up in which light/which filter that I hadn't really thought past "okay, I'll get some rubble for the corals to attach to, then glue the rocks to plugs...." as a quick flash sometime yesterday afternoon.

I'm impressed that you got it there sans supplementation. I must admit, I'm a user: Reef Plus, Tech-I, Marine C, and Super Buffer. Oh well. To each his own.

I'm sending you a PM right after I post this so watch for it and get back to me.

I LOVE the egg-crate idea for a Frag tank. It's relatively inexpensive, easy to work with and easy to replace. Also the holes are PERFECT if you happen to use reef-plugs (which I have a LOT to use). It's just really easy stuff and I can't wait to start making my reef racks.

Yeah I don't use supplements. I subscribe to "If you don't test for it don't DOSE for it" and I haven't bought any addition testing kits I guess if I buy more test kits then I will HAVE to buy the supplements too. No just kidding. I find that with my overly regular water changes that everyone seems to be getting the minerals they need through the salt mix. I will say that my corals have REALLY taken off after switching from IO salt mix to Reef Crystals. I can't say it's ALL because of the salt mix.. it could be that the tank is just finally getting mature and stable enough for the corals to take off. I hate to attribute my success to any one thing because that ONE thing might change.. so I'll just call it blind luck

thanks for looking at my tank!! And thanks a TON for the kind words and support. Honestly it's been a GROUP effort between me, My VERY caring and understanding wife, Reef Sanctuary and of course Mother Nature herself

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

Hey Matt Thanks for the kind words. I'll be totally honest with you.. I don't remember exactly what all I got from you. I have this tank and a 12g tank in my office and I try to go 50/50 and not be greedy from one to the other. Then again this tank has gotten the MOST attention and probably IS where your zoos went to *S*

Thanks for looking

Re: BigAl's 10g . . .

I honestly can't say for sure WHAT made them take off. It sort of just happened as the tank matured. The only significant change I've made on the tank over the last 6+ months is I changed from Instant Ocean salt mix to Reef Crystals salt mix. Other than that I just test test test and do water changes like a MAD man. I change water more than some people change socks....

This tank is SO ready to become a 90g Reef tank. It's gonna get transplanted into the 90 and this will be a dedicated PROP tank.
