DrHank's 155 Gallon Bowfront

Well folks, I finally made it to Punta Gorda on Saturday and picked this up.

This is the FREE set-up that I got. Additionally it had, lights, skimmer, chiller, calcium reactor, sump, pumps, controller, etc. In other words, everything. It needs a good clean-up and I'll probably build a bow stand for it. I'll try to keep you posted as the build continues.

Beautiful! I'm really interested in how you would go about building a bow front stand though.

Re: DrHank's 155 Gallon Bowfront

Thanks folks. No Scott, not a QT, maybe a FOWLR. My wife wants a full sized angelfish, a snowflake eel, and a lionfish. We'll see.

As far as a bowfront stand is concerned, the back and sides would be the same as a rectangular stand. The front would have to be made like the ribs in a ships hull and the doors in a similar fashion. The front would be finished with 1/4" A/C plywood. the doors would have to be curved as well.

The curving part is where I get lost.

Do you soak the wood and gentle apply pressure in order to get it to bend?

I`v heard smoking or was it steaming the wood works. But as it cools / drys, Would it just flatten out and tear off? Could just make the doors out of many narrow vertical pieces and then sand it smooth.

Re: DrHank's 155 Gallon Bowfront

Top and bottom will be a double layer of 3/4" plywood traced to match the tank. uprights will be 2X4s. The front and sides will be sheathed in 1/4" plywood then painted satin black to match the tank. Trim will be molding wrapped to the contour of the cabinet.

At least, that's what I'm planning.

Re: DrHank's 155 Gallon Bowfront

Very nice indeed...

That is really a nice stand. Is it in good condition?

I'd put the money and time you will spend on building a new stand into getting a matching tank for it.

I hope to see your project develop...

Re: DrHank's 155 Gallon Bowfront

It is a nice stand is in very good condition. Perfect for a 180 gallon. Made of Oak. Will sell after I've made the new stand. I love to woodwork. Made the stand and hood for my 210 as shown in DrHank's Tank chronicle.

Re: DrHank's 155 Gallon Bowfront

SCORE! Good job buddy! That bowfront stand will be a BEAR to make but will be SO worth it!

You can "Steam" the wood but some people will cut "reliefs" in the back of the plywood to allow for molding and bending for curves.

Keep us posted and CONGRATS!!

Re: DrHank's 155 Gallon Bowfront

Thanks Al. 1/4" plywood or paneling (put on backwards) should bend nicely to contour to the framework. Since it will be painted inside and out, I have a lot more options. The tank has a black frame and black silicone seams so I think I'll do the cabinet in satin black to compliment it. I'll post pictures as I go.
