Corrado’s 90 Gallon AGA Addiction

I’m moving up to a 90 gallon AGA from my 60 gallon acrylic. I never got around to writing a chronicle of my 60 but I guess I should have since it was my first reef tank and there was some serious DIY going on with it. Anyway, perhaps I’ll attach a photo of it to illustrate where I came from as I chronicle where I’m going with my new 90 gallon. My wife thought I was obsessed with the old 60, wait till she sees my new 90 gallon addiction.

Here's that pic of the out-going 60 gallon

So I did some searching around, priced a tank made with Starphire glass, decided not to trade a kidney for it, and went with the best price I could find for a 90 gallon AGA with an overflow from a LFS. I went with the standard 48x18x24 design that has a single overflow just off-center at the back of the tank. I also went with the black trim since I’ll be making a black stand to match the contemporary style of our living room.

Here's the new 90, lifeless and barren, desolate, begging for life... Just kidding But seriously, here it is.

Now that the intro is out of the way, first thing's first. Time to build a stand. I've actually been working on it in the garage and snapping pics as I go but I haven't had a chance to d/l them from the camera yet. I'll post them in a bit.

Wow! Your 60 is great, and I can't wait to see the 90 filled-up! You have good aquascaping skills, and I love all of that purple on your rocks.

Thanks guys, I'm glad you like it. It's mostly softies with just a few LPS but it has been a fun learning experience. I'll try to post a few closer pics when I get home.

Sweet stuff man. Like Sas says, post some closeups of the 60.
That aquascaping looks killer.

They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Re: Corrado’s 90 Gallon AGA Addiction

Alright, here a few pics of the out-going 60 before I tear it down (could be a few weeks). Pardon the large image size, sasquatch and vdituri wanted some close-ups so I figured I'd leave the them full size, normally I shrink them a bit.

Re: Corrado’s 90 Gallon AGA Addiction

I've been working on the stand over the past few days and I've made some serious progress. I've just got to make the doors and do a bit of filling and sanding and then it'll be ready to paint. Here are some pics of the stand so far.

Re: Corrado’s 90 Gallon AGA Addiction

Alright, I’ve just finished the stand. I’m happy with how it turned out for the most part with the exception of an ever so slightly warped piece of wood that ended up as one of the door sections. When the right door is closed the top of it comes in contact with the stand as it should but the bottom unfortunately has a small gap as the wood gently curves outward away from the stand. We’re talking maybe 1/8 of an inch but still. I have no idea how I missed that during construction. I think for now I’ll not focus on that and just get to work on the sump and perhaps replace that section of the door when I find myself looking for a project. By the way, I designed the doors to fold in half for no other reason than I thought it would be unique but still functional. Who knows maybe when I go to replace that warped section I’ll put traditional doors on.
Here are a few pics of the finished product.

Any experiences/input on leveling a new tank and stand?

Since I’ve just finished building the stand I’m now mulling over setting the tank on it and leveling it. I seem to remember hearing a few stories about tanks cracking due to uneven pressure on the glass. I did a bit of searching and found that Woodstock’s 120 cracked back in August and he had to swap it out. I also read that AGA won’t honor any warranty if the tank isn’t on one of their stands, hence my concern. I really don’t want any surprises and since I’m at a very convenient stage I would rather take precautions now rather than become a statistic.
Is the problem here that the surface that the tank mates to is not a level/smooth area to rest on (2x4 frame in my case)? Or is it that the entire stand and tank unit needs to sit level on the floor? I have read of people shimming the stand to level the entire unit and I’ve read of people using liquid nails and plywood between the tanks and stand as a self leveler. I’ve even heard of people using foam between the two but from my research it seems that foam isn’t a desired method with glass tanks. Also, do I need to be overly concerned with leveling the tank and stand for short duration plumbing, tank, and sump leakage tests in my garage/driveway? Any input would be appreciated guys and gals.
Thanks,
Justin
