Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

My mom, being the sweet and amazing mom that she is, is getting Ben and I a used 55gal tank. The first thing I want to do before I even move the tank in my house is spray paint the back glass black. I called miss lovely Lynn while I was at Home Depot, she did a quick search and found that Krylon was one of the best. So I got this one.

Ben and I have decided that we are going to take things slow with this new tank. We have so many questions and are very eager to learn. So first things first. I saw the tank and their sand that they have in it has all kinds of dead snails in it. So I think we're going to buy new sand, but are still debating because of the price of sand. It would be over $60 for sand. So what do yall think. New sand or old sand? Or what about half and half.

They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

I say rinse the old sand and add new to it. The sand in your other tank is not going to be enough and you'll need more to bring it up to at a minimum of 3-4". I'm assuming you are going to break down the other tank?

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

How would you go about rinsing it?

I'm not using the sand from the 29gal....the sand that I would be rinsing would be from the 55gal.

I'm not breaking down the other tank until for another 6-8 weeks. I'm not sure but I think there's ich in the 29 gal tank so I talked to the LFS and told them that the fish may have ich. They said to just bring them up there and they'll take a look at them and see what they can do. I don't want those fish in the new tank at all....I just don't wanna take the chance of spreading ich to the 55gal.

Freshwater, multiple times, then spread out to dry. Pick out anything you don't want in there.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

That's how I would do it. Is this an existing SW set up? Was it a reef or FO tank? Has this tank ever been treated with copper? If you don't know the answers to these questions, then you don't know much about the sand and I'd consider starting with all new sand. I thought you were going to use the sand from your 29.

It was a FO (they also had shrimp but no corals) saltwater tank....It has never been treated with copper.

I'm not sure what we're doing yet.....That's y I'm asking everyone. I wanna see what other people think I should do.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Is the tank acrylic or glass. If acrylic, that paint is great. If it's glass, I suggest reading the can to see if it will bond to glass. Otherwise, you may want to consider a paint that is meant for glass.

You learned from your mistakes and that is commendable. I respect that!

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

So does anyone have any comment, suggestions or tips about spray painting the tank?

Do I need to cover the other sides of the glass?

I would cover the other sides of the tank while painting just to be sure.
Maybe PM Woodstock since she used Krylon on her tank. See how it is holding up.
