Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

are you testing it yourself. If so it is possible that your test kit is out of date or inaccurate try the LFS & see what thier results are

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

I went to the LFS they tested my water and got the same results as I did. They told me to do a 10% water change wait a week then test again. If nitrites and ammonia are still at 0 then it's cycled. But I dunno. I still wanna wait longer.

Did you put anything in to start the cycle? Did you ever see an amonia spike at all?

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Lynn I think it was assumed that since she already had HIGH nitrates that the tank was already cycling. I would still ADD the deli shrimp to make sure it's in process. Worst case is it IS cycling and it dissolves quickly.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Lynn I'm not sure if it's cycling. We never let the other tank cycle so all this is new to me. I never put a shrimp in there. The day after we set the tank up we tested the water and nitrates were up and ammonia and nitrites were 0 and that's how they still are.....ammonia never went up.

No ammonia spike = no cycle. Are you sure your ammonia test is accurate?

Ash, was the SW you started with new? If so and it started out with nitrate, then your source water has nitrates. Nitrates are last in the nitrification process.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

I know I'm being really slow tonight but does that mean the water that I got from my LFS had nitrates in it? OR my tank is cycled?

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

it s quiet possible. The ewasy way to figure that out is to ask a manager to check there salt water I have know of this to happen without the LFS even knowing if someelse is maintaining their RO/DI system for them

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Today I went to the LFS, got them to test their water and no nitrates. They said my nitrates are probably high because of the die-off from the LR.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

The die-off may have created a mini cycle that is at it's tail end. A water change and I think you're ready to start stocking your tank, slowly of course!
