Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Ben found a bug!!!!!

In the tank it was clear or yellowish and kinda looked like a shrimp. It's real small about the size of a black-eyed-pea...I'm gonna do some research and try to find a pic.....

what's a good website to search those type of thing.

That sounds awful big for a pod.
I guess you never know though.
That bristle worm is getting big.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

OMG....The worm came out again and went crazy swimming around and then starfish came out too!!!!

We thought it was cool at first but then thought maybe not and checked the water and nitrites were high!!!!

So we just did a 30% WC.

What else can we do?

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Nitrites are very toxic tio inverts, may explain why your starfish and polycheats are acting up. Water changes and eliminate the ammonia spike. What could have caused the ammonia spike (ie. over feeding)?

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

The tank has only been set up for 3 wks so it's probably just cycling now.

I didn't think it was gonna because everything in that tank (rock and sand) has already been cycled b4 and nothing dried up or anything so.....I really just didn't think it was gonna cycle

Loading up a video now that I took of the worm and starfish.....It's not pretty. Though we we're excited to see "cool" stuff out.....but then realized it wasn't a good thing.

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Ok, that's a bummer. Mix up lots of salt and change water to keep the ammonia and nitrites at bay. Keep testing and good luck!

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Get enough for the next couple of days. Test every few hours and change water on an as needed basis. What are your ammonia/nitite readings and are they up or down since your last water change?

Re: Ashley and Ben's 55gal Gift.

Keep a close eye and change water if they go up, which could happen if the tank is still cycling.

Ash, I'm sure you've heard this before, but the RO/DI unit was one of the best investments I've made. It costs much less in the long run than buying water at the store, and I got a unit that goes under the sink and has an output for drinking water and a 3 gallon pressure tank so I don't have to wait forever. We used to use those PUR filters, but those things really add up if you change them monthly like you're supposed to. The RO/DI unit cost less than changing those things every month alone. I also found out that the RO from the store was about the same quality as my tap water (apparently they weren't really changing their filters), so I was paying lots of $ for junk.

I picked one up for $139 shipped on ebay and I've been very pleased with it so far, I can pm you a link if your interested.
