Re: 240

I know that you dont go by length. There are many different factors that one must consider when stocking a tank. Herbivores have a lighter load than carnivores. Fish that make many "small" poos pull less strain than fish that take a few "Large" poos. Also some fish need a very large territory, some verley venture from a small territory. Some fish are very long, but skinny. Some fish are short and fat. That alone throws off the inch to gallon rule off. I am just trying to get a general idea.

Maybe its not too late to tell jack I need a bigger tank. 8 BSJF....sounds good.

Thanks for the link Heinz.

Re: 240

Whoa Heinz, is his tank 870 Gallons?
And he only has a few fish in it.
I know this is a difficult question, as there are so many factors that influence it. How many do you think my 240 gallon tank (SPS dominated) will be able to support?

Heinz, its a small world...the link you posted(Ralph /cashh.de) happens to be one of the tanks that I have admired since its creation and has influenced many of my preferences (along with a few other Japanese and Italian tanks out there). Let him know that his efforts in reefkeeping have made an impact and to please continue.

Excellent selection. Beautiful and their swimming habits will give you very nice viewing. Most are my favorites. I am pleasantly surprised that you do not have a tang on that list

Re: 240

Doni- I have been doing alot of thinking latley regaurding tangs. I have come to the conclusion that Tangs are best left in the ocean, or huge tanks. They LOVE to swim, and most of our normal sized tanks just arent big enough to keep even a medium sized tang HAPPY. I dont want a fish that is just surviving, I want all of my fish to thrive. Personally I just dont think that Tangs are really ever that happy in our tanks. I believe that there are MANY other fish that are equally pretty, add just as much activity, and are far easier to keep HAPPY, than tangs.
So I will not own another tang until I get my HUGE tank in my Home(when I build it)

Re: 240

Your tank could easily support these three tangs:

Acanthurus
Lavender Tang (Acanthurus nigrofuscus), 8"

Ctenochaetus

Yellow Eyed Kole (Ctenochaetus strigosus), 7"

Zebrasoma

Purple Tang (Zebrasoma xanthurum), 10"

So you want a tang?

@Bozemann

Ralph is glad very much about the praise, unfortunately, he is in the last time only very seldom in the German forum, however, has answered to a PM of me. Ralph and I have started possibly at the same time with our projects. His premise was a SPS dominated tank, mine was fixed rather on fish hardly to be held and their postbreeding, our ways something broke up. Should I want to build up, however, once a SPS dominated tank, Ralph's tank would be exemplary for me.

OK Michael,

you have asked me and I will also inform you of my honest opinion to your project.

1. I would hold in a SPS dominated tank no clown fishes, they are better lifted in a Nano, there they also come much better to breed.

2. I would maintain fish are ALWAYS as a pair, so also royal gramma and mandarin. Specially these both live together in the nature ALWAYS as a pair.

3. Anthiase are a fish they living ever in a school of fish, however, 3 fish are no school of fish. The typical behaviour of the Anthiase is effective when they swim in a little bigger school of fish (6-10 animals). Antiase would always be my first choice for a SPS dominated aquarium. There they plankton eater are one is ......

4. are sufficient frequent feeding compelling (5-6 x during the day). My first choice as a Return pump would be a Red Dragon 12.000L/ph, she is extremely quiet and very poor in servicing. SPS tanks should have a very high water circulation. This automatically leads to the next point....

5. Therefore, my Skimmer would be a Red Dragon 250 internal. In Europe the indisputable No.1 in skimming. By the necessary feeding of the SPS corals and the Anthiase with plankton an extremely strong Skimmer is important. The Red Dragon IS an extremely strong Skimmer, very expensive, but just also one of the best ones I knows.

You asked me for my opinion .... this is my honest opinion ....

BTW Your fish choice is Excellent.

In an SPS dominated tank ? Never a Kole tang, he swims too "nervously", I would always have fear around my SPS corals . A Purple tang fits there already better, also he better fits to the Antiases. Kole tangs very often behave aggressively compared with small gobies. The BSJF and mandarins would have to suffer certainly from it. Lavender Tang is a good choice again, but a SPS tank becomes overgrown with good care very fast, there does not remain a lot of swimming space for a tang. My opinion....
