Frankie, I don't understand. Can you explain?

I thought this much overflow capacity with upturned ells would soften the noise level. However it sounds like you believe air will get trapped in the drain pipe and need to burp slowing down the flow.

I have already PVCd the outside 90s into the slip bulkheads. I cannot remove them. However I can run tubing down the 90s from the tank if I need to. Do you think I am going to get a lot of burping?

It also sounds like you're saying throttle the overflow, which I have heard a lot of people say not to do.

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

You'll want to "allow & provide" for the air in your system. You may have to "tweak" it some here and there but if you don't "allow" for it you'll get burping for sure. Yes you want to make an allowance for "throttling" the overflow. Sometimes that flow has to be "Tweaked" as well. If you allow for it now it's so much easier later on.

Looking good

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

I see what Frankie is saying, I have the same set up in another tank, how are you gong to guard them from critters going on the water slide? this will make some difference to the sound level depending on what you do,also as they slime up and algae starts growing in there they quiet down a bit

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

I am not saying throttle the overflow.
The tube shoved down will work. I cannot explain it any better then i have. (text sucks!)
When you fill that puppy up you will understand. the pvc glued in is not a problem, all i was suggesting is to drill a hole into the TOP of the 90 degree ell right above the tube that go's down to the sump. Thread a quick connect ball valve into the hole so you can adjust it for noise and flow.
I see Sas lurking. he's better at explaining then me.

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

Thanks. Someone draw me a picture.

OK. I will look into drilling the top of the outside 90s and putting a quick connect .25 inch ball valve to control for vacuum.

I don't want to build drain boxes right now. I was just going to roll up some gutter guard and stuff it in the 90s. I know that will require cleaning.

Or let my fish visit my sump.

I like the algal solution. Wait and it will fix itself.

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

where the 90's come out the back of the tank on the top drill and tap a hole in each, install a john guess(sp) fitting for 3/8 or 1/2 ,and use clear plastic tubing to go higher than water line, this is a vent and will really increase flow, Frankie Im not lurking Im just not motivated enough to go to work yet!

LOL. Frankie nice fishnu sketchup.

SO. Drill the top of the 90 for .25. Do I just jam a JG valve in there or do I need to thread it in somehow??

Tap = thread the hole wth a thread tapper. sas is right also about the size. Go bigger then .25 and use a .50 John Guest ball valve. Adding some ridged tubing is a good idea also for making it even more quiet.

I'm getting some great ideas for quieting down my system from your thread.

Thanks!

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

OK, PVC glued in with air valves in the 90s. I drilled and threaded before I saw the most recent posts. We'll have to see if this is enough air.

These are .5 OD male threaded quick connect valves
