Way back when, I noticed Jeff said he sat down and looked at his rock in his tank and tried to become one with his rock, or something like that.
When I got my 2nd part of the TBS package I just put it in the tank and did not worry about aquascaping. I wanted to become familiar with the rock and let the rock tell me where it should go. Then after 10 days or so I knew where my rock belonged.
I did not use anything to hold the rock in place.

I have used the 2 part putty to attach a couple of corals on a small rock to my base rock. I didnt notice the skimmer doing much out of the ordinary. My putty was a grayish color and it has taken a couple months to color up.

You could also use some acrylic rods/pegs to help with your rock building. I have also read of some using zip ties too.

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

Thanks Jeff.

I have some of those extra long zip ties, but am reluctant to use them for esthetic reasons.

I thought about plexiglass rods and dowels but have not found what I am looking for.

I think I will try the putty on a rock and see what happens. Someone said aggressive rinsing helps limit foam in the skimmer.

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

Why would you want to limit foam in the skimmer? That defeats its purpose!

Some people have said that the plumbers putty makes skimmers go crazy, although no harmful chemicals are present (?). People have suggested a good rinsing to keep this under control. Personally, I think a good rinsing of anything is good.

I don't mind skimming , but I would rather not skim my tank dry!

Plumbers putty? The stuff that seals sink drains and faucet fixtures?

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

There is a lot of threads on this topic on other sites...Many people favor the "reef safe" version, while those who use Aquamend and other "pottable Water safe" applications, and have been using it for years report no ill effects to their tanks.

Eric Bornemann has said he has used this for years. At lowes.

Re: Labor of Love. I hope.

Well John I have been reading your thread for awhile now and finally caught up with everything. I must say I think it looks great. I love the fact that your rock sits slightly above your sand. I can't wait to see those pics. As well as continue watching your tank become more reef like.
