Surfzone's 120 Cube

It was just my luck that back in mid July that I inherited a 120 cube. I knew that with this thank that i would have to get rid of the 29 in order to set it up. Upon my return from Disney in Late July I moved to my house where I started work on it. I striped off all the silicone, and resealed the tank. I also sanded down the stand inside and out, restained it, and panted the inside white. Once that was done the floor was reinforced with cinder blocks, and 2x4s. I was able to get the stand in place with no problem, but the tank just made it into the room. now the real fun began. I had to find something to fit under the tank to use as a sump, and fuge. I couldn't get a standard tank to fit under the tank for the life of me, so I settled on a rubber made bin. i made my overflows out of PVC, and hard plumbed the tank, I'm still using my DIY skimmer which is going nuts with the new 500GPH pump on it, my return pump I'm not sure what brand it is, but i bought it from a local reefer the label says that it pumps 1000gph so i didn't argue, and it's still running just fine, i'll probably end up putting a stronger pump on it, i also doped a mag 7 in the overflow box in order to boost the flow a bit. I put my dry sand in the tank, and preceded to make three trips to the LFS for RO. now that the tank was full of water I turned on the pumps, no leakage from the seals on the plumbing. i let it run for a few days before i salted the water. The strange thing that i found with this tank is that once i had put my LR in the tank the tank never cycled for a while i was testing water every few days to see if the ammonia spiked or anything at all, but all leaves stayed the same, so i put my existing fish and coral into the tank, i added a few more lbs of LR and a few fish. then Aug. 21st 2007 an infamous date in my tank history. That morning my dad got up and told me to put both dogs outside before going to class. Not thinking about it I just did it. I go to class as normal first week of school just a little hotter than normal (115). When i get home the house is hot, both my halides had clicked on with the timer that morning i quickly turned them off, but it was too late the damage had been done,(tank temp of 95) i lost my rose anemone, sunpolyps, cynorina, and every other coral i had with the exception of my zoos, and Acanthestrias. my fish were stressed, but nothing that the didn't recover from. later I found that the AC had not been on all day and that is why my dad told me to put the dogs outside. so as of now i'm just doing fish only until i can afford a chiller. As of today my live stock includes the surviving corals, 6 line wrasse, yellow clown goby, lawnmower blenny, two bangaii cardinalfish, and a female swallowtail angel. i would like to add two more wrasses, a male swallowtail , and an achilles tang.

Re: Surfzone's 120 Cube

Thanks Frankie, right now I'm just putting fish in there until I can get my hands on a chiller. My tank runs a constant 80-83.

Re: Surfzone's 120 Cube

Tank looks great so far! I'm a sucker for cubes, and you don't see large ones that often. Keep up the pics. Keep your head up, and keep researching and I'm sure you'll have better luck from here on out.

Re: Surfzone's 120 Cube

I just can't seem to catch much of a break with this tank. I came home from class today to find my chocolate tang dead in the back of the tank. He had been getting thinner and thinner the past few days, but he kept his appetite. I'm not sure what happened I attribute this to an internal parasite.

Re: Surfzone's 120 Cube

Thanks. I will not give up if that's what your asking. If I can get my hands on another chocolate tang than I will, however there are many other different tangs that i would like to try too.
