Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Ok I went to "Big Blue" this evening and got some pipe. They only have the 1 1/2" in 20' sections and I just can't make myself buy 20' when I only need 2' so I got some of the black PVC instead and I think I like it better.

I'll be back in a moment with some rough pics.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Ok here are a couple of pics

#1 is just the new standpipe alone before placing it into the over flow

#2 Is the standpipe and output both in the overflow for looks sake.

I will make final cuts once the tank is on the stand (next week) and I can see it better.

I had to cut the "T" piece and the elbow that goes into it to make it more "compact". After all was said and done it fits very well and was so easy to do. I spent more time sorting through parts as Slowes than I did making the unit. All that's left is to finalize some lengths, make air vent holes and tighten everything up.

Grrrrr..... what does it leach? Luckily nothing is glued and once I get all lengths finlized I can use the existing BLACK as templates for PVC.... once again gggggggRRRRRRRR

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Al,

I had the article on it now I can find it if I remember correctly The salt & nutirents actually break down the interior walls as a residue that breaks down further creating toxins. That is why the use it for drains.

that makes perfect sense. No biggie. Once I get everything just right I'll just use that black CRAP as a template and cut out the right lengths from PVC. That's ok because the ABS was easy to cut so cutting and test fitting and recutting was much easier in the ABS than it will be in the PVC. This way I'll make fewer PVC cuts in the long run

Thanks for the compliments. Your picture helped tremendously and it helped that I've made several other projects from PVC (but none of them carried water). I have make Airplane racks, Test racks, starter stands, and all types of handy things from PVC over the years. It's actually pretty fun to work with.

Ok here are a couple of pics of my sump from a couple of different angles.

Any suggestions or ideas? It's a 29g tank.

a perfect stand pipe Allen..... but I would have to make suggestion. If you insert an air adjustment cock, you can adjust the air supply to the Syphon and thus the water flow.

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Thanks Heinz I read about a similar mod earlier today but a few people posted back that over time the salt creep ends up interferring with the pet-cock valve. Have you had this problem? I like the idea of making it "adjustable" like that.

Jack, I don't have a clue. This tank came just like you see it. I would imagine that's where the carbon or other media bag can go. I think I have ran upon a snag... I am a HUGE fan of a refugium and had planned to run this 29g as the refuguim in the middle. But I can't run a refugium and a skimmer in the same chamber. Any ideas?

I was thinking #1 (egg-crate area) was the input supply/carbon area, #2 sump/skimmer section, #3 return pump section. Now if I want a refugium will I have to add another tank just for THAT reason?
