Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Glad to hear things are coming together. I can't wait to see it up and running. Almost time to let the cycle begin.

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Ok so it's Monday morning and for SOME reason I could NOT sleep last night. Even WHEN I did go to bed I couldn't stop thinking about my tank and how I needed to tweak this... adjust that...

luckily today I think the "fumes" have worn off and I am thinking more clearly now. Let's hope I am TYPING more clearly!!

I have the tank almost quiet. I adjusted some flow and added more water to the sump and those two things made a HUGE noise difference.

Below are some pictures.. unfortunately my camera batter went dead early on so I'll have to take more this evening.

Here is my MESSY work area in front of the tank

Here is the main drain from the tank showing the "Union"

Main drain showing the transfer over to the sump intake

Main Drain (full shot)

This is the end of the "T" that feeds the Fuge

Blurry shot of the "DURSO" pipe (still in Mock-Up stage)

Here is BigHombre filling the tank with COLD FW

and we have SUMPAGE

Again the sump "working" but still needs some "Tweaking"

I hear ya on THAT one! Once I get all the "fine tuning" I'll drain it, rebuild the DURSO out of PVC (It's ABS right now for ease of cutting & trimming) and then fill with SW and add Sand & LR! Then let the CYCLE BEGIN! With all I am hearing lately about "quick cycles" and such I think my tank should be able to cycle in probably 24 hours or so *Grins*. I'll be able to add my live stock and I have 2 clams and an anemone I want to have in it by Friday evening

What about the mandarin and sand sifting star? They should go in first.

Water, glorious water! Looks great Al! Don't lose too much sleep over it, you have plenty of time to do that when your live stock goes in there!

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Thanks guys! I guess I was just so "Wired Up" over it. It's been a long process (5 months I believe) and to actually see WATER in it! I'm having a tough time staying focused here at work today... can you believe that?

Great pictures Al, your planning is really going to pay off in a great system. Are you going to submerge the drain lines coming into the fuge and sump?

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

The one into the SUMP is now submerged. That made a HUGE reduction in noise. The one TO the fuge may need the same action. As of last night I was just concentrating on the MAIN part of the system and the FUGE is still "Off". That's part of tonight's task. Add more WATER to the system and fill up the FUGE and get it tweaked. I do have a question for the experience "Sumpers". It seems like a lot of "force & bubbles" are being introduced into my Sump Intake. The bubbles are NOT making it over the bubble wall but the turbulence adds some to the total noise of the system. I am thinking it will take some more "Adjusting of the valves to get the water to air ratio right. But does anyone else notice this in their system?

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Submerging the pipes should also cut down on moisture under the tank.

My main drain releases some air bubbles and there is some force in the water coming out. I don't really notice the noise, especially when the skimmer pump is on (it is definitely the loudest thing on my system), but I use a filter sock over the main drain most of the time and that cuts down on the turbulence.
