Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

At first we thought that Panmanmatt's pics were yours
Thus the confusion.

What is the purpose of the little 90 degree elbow on the intake of the Mag?

I kept the filter sponge on my mag return pump and I make sure i clean it every week or two.

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

The 90 will cause the pump to draw from lower in the sump. I had to add it to mine cause the pump kept pulling in air from the water's surface. This also allows you to run a lower water level in the sump to allow room for back flow when the pumps are off.

All good points. However a 90 will restrict the intake to a certain point. too much, & the pump will cavitate . If the 90 is stuck in a corner or close to a wall it will just add to the restriction. Consider using a 90 only if necessary.

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Ok I'm plumbing again! I have a LOT done but a LOT to go still.... It seems like for every step I get done there are 3 new ones created!!

I am doing the Over Flow. I have it "mocked up" but don't know how to predetermine the actual height of the unit from the base of the tank. I'm sure it's not an exact science but any idea on getting it "close"? Also where does the "siphon break hole" go?

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Yes the standpipe. I have "created" my version of a DURSO but can't get my mind around how to get the right height without having WATER in the tank.....

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

The water in my overflow stays about 1 cm over the "crook" of my durso. In the overflow you want balance between a noisy waterfall from water falling too far and scum collecting on top because water doesn't fall far enough. I've got mine set where the water falls about an inch. I would advise setting it up without gluing the standpipe and shooting high so you can trim the pipe down later if needed.

The hole goes in top of the durso pipe. Start small (smallest drill bit you have) and you'll have to enlarge accordingly once you have water flowing to make it just right.

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

By top of the durso I mean in the endcap, you can see the tiny holes in the picture above.

This is the plan I used for my dursos...
Build your own Durso Standpipe â„¢
