Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

A rough measure comes up with 1x 1 3/4" and 1x 1 1/2"

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...currentNO3-((%WC*.01)currentNO3)=finalNO3 (thanks Luukosian)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

That makes the centers 1" & 3/4" correct?

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Oh no.. I was measuring the center (ID) not the OD of the actual fittings. I can go measure that... BRB

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

(OD) measures roughly 3 1/2" on one and 2 1/2" on the other. That's the OD of the larger part of the bulkhead.

thanks for your input Jack

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

I was afraid of that

Thanks for your input and help. I am not in a hurry... just whenever you can get the pics would be great. Right now it's still just sitting on the floor so there's no rush. That actually makes it easier to work on

G'nite all I have to get up in 4 hours....

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

I contacted Glasscages.com - Home this morning to find out just what they have included in my kit (bulk head size and intentions for egg-crate) and here is their response....

Quote:
Bulkheads included are 1" supply and 1 1/2" return We don't supply a kit, but I'm sure you'll find everything you'll need in the plumbing section of a Home Depot.
The eggcrate area is where many people put filter pads for the return water to pass thru. the other end is where the pump sits to send water back into the tank.
the middle area is often filled w/ bioballs to increase the surface area for bacterial action.
Thanks a lot
Glasscages.com - Home
I can't believe that's the size I have but I guess since they supplied it that must be it. I'll re-measure tonight late when I get home.

When I go to assemble a "stand-pipe_ do I need to worry about noise? I've read articles about people talking about how horribly loud their stand-pipe is and horror stories about this and that. What's the best idea you people are using? Jack I'm hoping you can get those pics/charts out for me so I know what to get when I make a plumbing run.

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

Al this is a simple & effective design

pipe size relates to hte size of you bulk head in your case 1 1/2" & 1"

Part Needed:

Pipe
T
90
& Cap

No glue is needed

Drill a hole twards the bottom of the T as I did & also drill a hole in the top of the cap.

Very quiet simple deson works great

I would not recommend running the MAG pumps in-line or externally ! Although the manufactorer says you can do either there's been issues with these guys overheating and running real loud. Also to run them externally you'd have to drill the sump and that can be difficult to do.

Here's some instructions on how to build the Durso standpipe:

I would use the 1 1/2" as the drain and the 1" as the return. A 1" bulkhead as a drain can probably only handle about 700gph if I remember correctly

Re: BigAl's slow chronicle . . .

I have never had the issue of overheating. I can see where it would be an issue if you flow to the pump was restricted. Meaning if you pump is 1800GPH & you flow to the pump is 1200GPH then possbly

I have all the parts in hand (it's nice to work in a building supply company) for the (1 1/2") stand-pipe assembly except I'll need to go out to the yard and get a short piece of 1 1/2" pipe for connections etc.

Do I make a similar design for the output? Do I simply want this water to shoot back into the tank over the top of the overflow box or do I need to try to come up with a system to "Distribute" the water out from the over flow area?
