Re: Akwar'eum

Latest update.
The Dendronepthya is looking just terrible. I noticed some tissue necrosis yesterday. I put a koralia 3 in the tank, blowing from back to front, and the carnation and sun coral are in a much stronger flow now. The sun loves it, the carnation is at least standing up a little. The golden polyps hate the extra flow though, they are very pouty. Everyone is getting blown about a bit, I really wish I had a #2K.
The container I have been mixing my saltwater in sprang a leak but I didn't notice it 'til today. About 15gal of water have gone somewhere, the floor isn't very wet though, it's a mystery. I have another container I'm sterilizing tommorrow.
The Fromia indica is doing GREAT! I finally have a starfish that is doing well. He travels all over the tank. I need to try to put some food in his path, I think nori may be all I have for him. I'm not really sure what to try.
Happy reefing All!

Carnation coral. Very beautiful but extremely difficult. The current has to be at exactly the right velocity from exactly the right direction with exactly the right food in the water for them to feed. It was attached to a suncoral is why I've got it at all. Thanks for looking Chris!

Re: Akwar'eum

I've been looking at your pictures, and I just want to say...

You have an AMAZING softie/lps tank! This is one of the best 75s I have seen!
It is SO unique, and the rockscaping is super natural and pretty!
How did you achieve the effect of the natural aquascape??? I LOVE it!

Re: Akwar'eum

Wow, thanks Chris! That's the best aquarium compliment I've ever gotten. This aquascaping is the third attempt at getting it to look natural. I think I've gotten close this time. I really like the way it looks. Gail says it looks so good because she won't let me spend any money on another tank yet so I have to pour all my energy into this one, LOL, it's probably true. I do tinker with it A LOT!

How did I get it to look like that? I was lucky when I picked out my rock to get several large flat pieces, I had absolutely NO IDEA what I was doing, I just go what I thought looked cool, beginners luck. Plus, I looked at a lot of photographs of tanks I liked, and reef photos to model mine.

I appreciate the confidence with the carnation, but it turns out it was unfounded... he finally gave in. The suncoral and the two oysters that he was attached to (and the reason I had it at all) are doing great! The week we were on vacation, and I wasn't here to take care of them really hurt. Most everyone has recovered (except the carnation). Thanks again!

Re: Akwar'eum

Thanks Scott, I've actually learned a lot about caring for them, but I wouldn't want to buy one solely to have a carnation again. It's aweful to watch them go once they decide to.

I've got another fun surprise here. I usually only see the tentacles of my spaghetti worms. I've got DOZENS of them, but here is a real treat, you can see practically the whole worm.

These guys are great detritus eaters. It's pretty fun watching them grab food and pull it in. It seems they especially like sea hare poop! They should never go hungry at all.

Thanks!

Re: Akwar'eum

Well, it's time for an update. I don't have photos because my camera card has been down, I've ordered one from wolf camera but I don't think it's ever coming.
I had posted a thread about my clove polyps not doing well. Prow took me under his wing on the subject and I'd like to thank him...THANKS PROW!!!!
We discovered that my iodide additions were displacing my alkalinity and causing imbalances in my chems. So I stopped dosing on Monday. At that time my levels were:
NH4:0
NO2:0
NO3:0
Ca:460
Alk:7
Mag: couldn't test because I had misplaced the vial, contacted Seachem and they shipped a new one ASAP, I got it TODAY! Free of charge I might add- Love Ya Seachem!!
SG:35ppt
Temp:80
PH:All over the place, from 7.9 in morn to 8.2+ by evening

Today I retested:
NH4:0
NO2: .025??!!
NO3: .02
Ca:490
Alk:9
Mg:1375
SG:35ppt
Temp:80
PH:7.9/am - 8.08/pm
I'm not sure what the nitrites are about!? Any clues?

I installed the 250w MH I purchased from Bigun on Wednesday, replacing the 150w Oddysea crap I had. I think that's the last of the Oddysea fiasco. I hate the Oddysea company and wish there was a way to make them stop making products! ...Anyway, these lights are Icecap (love the Icecap company BTW) 250w 14000K MH and they are beautiful!

My fuge was down for 10 days while I built a new overflow (the old one sprung a leak). I took 4 trys to get it right but everything is back up and working better than ever! Got it going last Sunday. It helped in a big way to stabalize my PH.

Since I stopped dosing Iodide my clove polyps have practically disappeared. Don't know if there's a connection or if it's other chems or they just don't like ME!

That's about all I've got. I'll post pics as soon as the new card comes in! Thanks for looking.- Greg

Re: Akwar'eum

Great update Greg! That is very odd on the nitrite. I'd retest that in a day and see if it holds or get a new kit. Has anything gone missing?

You have a tailless Cardinal! Boy that would make for a difficult quick-get-away!

yeah man! He's been tailless for 5 months now. The serpent star (who now resides in the refugium) ate his tail before he could get away. I have two more tiny red serpents now.... you don't think.... nah.. come on!
